Around 30 new players have been added to Prep Girls Hoops New Jersey’s 2023 prospect rankings, recently updated. With so many new players, that means plenty of new articles for us to talk about who to watch out for overall. We continue our multi-part series analyzing the newest prospects in the 2023 class in this article.
No. 44: [player_tooltip player_id="404233" first="Mya" last="Davis"] - PG, University
Davis played in just 20 games over her first two high school seasons, scoring 100 total points. Her junior year was her much-anticipated breakout season for University, averaging over 12 points a game along with 1.9 made three-pointers a game. She really grew as a shooter this season and dominated from beyond the arc. No one expected this level of dominance from her and she’s without a doubt stepped up for University into a big time playmaker.
No. 66: [player_tooltip player_id="404203" first="Isabella" last="DeCaesar"] - SG, West Deptford
DeCaesar has followed a much similar path to Davis, sparingly playing her first two seasons before getting her break as a junior. She’s taken full advantage of that jump in playing time, averaging 7.5 PPG this season with 31 made three-pointers. Her production numbers on offense are balanced, showcasing her ability to not only shoot the three, but drive in on defenders and attempt to put opponents on skates.
No. 77: [player_tooltip player_id="404230" first="Shana" last="Desir"] - 5-8 SF, Columbia
Desir definitely spread the wealth across her stat sheet this season, scoring over nine points a game along with 5.5 rebounds a game, 1.1 blocks a game, 1.9 steals a game and 1.5 made three-pointers a game. The stats speak for themselves and Desir is an early candidate to be a stock riser heading into next season. Despite her 5-8 frame, she’s an agile player in the lane and is really able to dazzle on the defensive side of the ball. Her quick thinking has allowed her to get that extra step on opponents on defense as well.
No. 62: [player_tooltip player_id="404210" first="Kaylan" last="Deveney"] - 6-2 PF, Shawnee
Deveney and [player_tooltip player_id="321564" first="Nia" last="Scott"] are currently Shawnee’s two featured forwards, with Scott starting and Deveney, more often than not, coming on and off the bench. However, the 6-2 forward is really making a case for herself as a main piece on this Shawnee team, able to score and rebound well. Her tall frame has given her more flexibility to expand her range with Scott able to really hone in on her craft in the interior. Deveney has shown the additional ability to pass and with more starting-caliber playing time, she’s going to be a big piece on this team.
No. 57: [player_tooltip player_id="404206" first="Jessenia" last="Edwards"] - 5-7 C, Timber Creek
Do not let her height fool you, Edwards can play a forward role as well as anyone in South Jersey. We’ve seen undersized centers before really shine and Edwards fits that mold, recording 1.6 blocks a game, 5.7 rebounds a game and 1.4 steals a game. Her style of defense is unique, not using her size to overwhelm opponents, but her quick reaction time gives her that split-second more to swarm the offense and cause bad possessions.
