Before I give my top 5 stock risers of the class of 2023 I want to note that to be considered on this list I looked at prospects currently ranked out of the top 15 in their class. The 2023 class is very talented and is very top-heavy right now with multiple college basketball commits in the top 10, headlined by names like [player_tooltip player_id="100467" first="Hilary" last="Behrens"], [player_tooltip player_id="154266" first="Reese" last="Ross"], [player_tooltip player_id="100478" first="Olivia" last="Kieffer"], Kami Wadsworth, and [player_tooltip player_id="100468" first="Avery" last="Broughton"]. The top 10 list may be tough to crack but I still see some shifting around in the future rankings and these five ladies I see as the top risers.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="246742" first="Annalyse" last="Weber"] - G - 5’8"</strong>
<strong>Hometown Team - Hanson</strong>
<strong>AAUTeam - N/A</strong>
Weber is a dynamic guard who makes a difference on each end of the floor. On defense, she is super competitive and plays the court extremely well with great anticipation to pick pockets and steal passes. She is fantastic at pressuring in the full court and creates a lot of turnovers for her team to capitalize on. On offense, she is a very balanced scorer who can light it up in bunches from the perimeter and is extremely effective at scoring off the dribble. She has some of the best footwork of all guards in the state and has been a pure scorer her whole career. Currently ranked at number 31 don’t be surprised to see this young lady end up in the top 20 or beyond.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="246177" first="Mallory" last="Valburg"] - F - 6’0"</strong>
<strong>Hometown Team - Jones County</strong>
<strong>AAUTeam - N/A</strong>
Valburg is a super talented post player that has the skills to play multiple positions. She is an extremely competitive athlete who gives fantastic effort on both ends. Averaging over 16 points per contest for her squad last year she has become a more complete scorer year after year. She’s a high percentage scorer and a great free shooter who gets to the line often. On the defensive end, she is a hard-nosed defender who grabbed nearly 4 steals per outing. Look for her to up her game going into her senior season, improve her perimeter game and propel herself into the top 20 from her current ranking of 33.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="375369" first="Kate" last="Miller"]- F - 5’10"</strong>
<strong>Hometown Team - Freeman</strong>
<strong>AAUTeam - Sacred Hoops</strong>
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Miller is one of the best post players you will find in the state. She has a variety of moves to finish in the paint and an overall polished game around the rim. A nice mid-range jump shot rounds our her offensive skill set. She is a talented rebounder on both ends and has one of the best work ethics you will find. Kate is a high IQ player and a great leader for her squad. If she can develop a variety of ways to finish off the dribble and a three-point shot, don’t be shocked to see her jump into the top 10. Even without this, I expect her to at least rise into the top 20 from her current ranking at 36.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="261616" first="Josie" last="Mousel"] - G - 6’0"</strong>
<strong>Hometown Team - Colman-Egan</strong>
<strong>AAUTeam - N/A</strong>
Mousel has battled through injuries her last couple of seasons but always manages to come back strong. 6-foot height and great length...check! A guard skill set...check! Consistent perimeter shooting...check! Superb competitive mindset and basketball IQ...check! This young lady checks a lot of boxes and I expect her to battle back from her current number 34 ranking and crack the top 15 in this class.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="166684" first="Leah" last="Herbster"] - F - 6’0"</strong>
<strong>Hometown Team - Vermillion</strong>
<strong>AAUTeam - Pentagon Schoolers- Brown</strong>
Herbster has a HUGE upside and I expect to see her game showcased greatly in her senior year at Vermillion. At 6’0" the talented forward has a lot to be excited about. A nice mid-range jump shot, a variety of moves to finish near the rim, solid handles at her position, and huge shot and passing lane disruption on the defensive end make for a really talented forward. Look for Herbster to climb from ranked number 44 at least into the top 20 and possibly beyond with a great summer competing for the Schoolers at the Sanford Pentagon.
