There were some really solid squads at the Breakdown USA Summer State Tournament on Sunday. That's not surprising given the organization's history as outstanding match-makers in girls basketball. The Class 3A bracket was no exception. Not surprisingly it was the 2021 state champions from Becker who prevailed but not before Stewartville turned a few heads with noteworthy wins over Benilde-St. Margaret's (by 34) and Alexandria (by 10) to advance to the championship game. The Tigers will have some very impressive young talent this season but on Sunday it was senior point guard [player_tooltip player_id="148327" first="Haylie" last="Strum"] who led the way. We don't usually pick an MVP in these types of events who did not play on the tournament-winning team. In this case, however, Strum was simply too good to overlook. Here are the selections for the Class 3A All-Tourney Team.

First Team

[player_tooltip player_id="148327" first="Haylie" last="Strum"] – 2023 guard, Stewartville

I distinctly remember the first time I say Haylie play back when she was a wisp of a thing, a precocious-but-tiny junior high kid running the offense for Stewie at a high school event in Rochester. Everyone in attendance was blown away by her skill level and exceptional quickness but most of all by just how tough she was. Fast forward to now and Strum is a grizzled veteran who can hang with the best of them. She's still on the small side but her game packs a wallop. The Top 100 senior proved it on Sunday as Stewartville turned in three solid performances. She scored 23 points against Benilde, 16 in the semifinal with Alexandria and 13 versus Becker. We love the potential of Stewartville's next elite point guard, 2026 standout [player_tooltip player_id="458305" first="Audrey" last="Shindelar"] who also made the All-Tourney Team, but for now this is Haylie's show and she's running it really well.

[player_tooltip player_id="108338" first="Dani" last="Nuest"] – 2023 guard, Becker (Michigan Tech)

Dani made her debut in Becker around the same time as Haylie was making a name for herself in Stewartville. On a team loaded with veterans, including her older sister Courtney, Dani eased her way into a prominent role over the course of two seasons. While there is plenty of talent in the lineup, including Sioux Falls commit [player_tooltip player_id="186119" first="Ayla" last="Brown"] and UW-Green Bay signee [player_tooltip player_id="108304" first="Maren" last="Westin"], Dani seems to be the biggest Bulldog, the one player everyone looks at to lead Becker, and that's exactly what she did on Sunday. The Prep Girls Hoops Top 30 senior has committed to Michigan Tech. Nuest earned that opportunity with speed, hustle, skill and scoring. She brings the energy consistently. She leads by example. And she puts the ball in the basket. On Sunday Dani made four triples against Hutchinson and had 20 points total. She made five threes in the championship game against Stewartville and averaged over 15 points per game.

[player_tooltip player_id="304938" first="Alexis" last="Rose"] – 2024 guard, Becker

It's difficult to win a tournament without solid play from your point guard and that's exactly what Becker received from Lexi. The 5'10 junior-to-be has had a stellar year and was recently promoted all the way into the Top 30 in the Prep Girls Hoops Class of 2024 rankings. Sunday was her first action since that promotion happened and Lexi lived up to her shiny new status and then some. She ran the Becker offense with aplomb, combining great ball movement with scoring opportunities and standout defense. Rose's play helped Becker score a 38-point win over Hutchinson and a 16-point semifinal victory against Orono before defeating Stewartville in the championship game.

[player_tooltip player_id="346165" first="Hadley" last="Thul"] – 2025 wing, Alexandria

Alexandria is one of the most exciting young teams in Class 3A. If you are looking for a favorite to win it all in 2024 or 2025, the Cardinals need to be on your list. Their Class of 2025 group is special, including guards [player_tooltip player_id="396428" first="Allie" last="Haabala"] (ranked #44), [player_tooltip player_id="346183" first="Chloe" last="Scholl"] (#51) and [player_tooltip player_id="453771" first="MaCee" last="Linow"] (#96). The alpha Cardinal, however, is 6'1 wing [player_tooltip player_id="346165" first="Hadley" last="Thul"] whose length, grace and natural feel for the game have earned her the #12 ranking in the grade. Hadley's game grew a ton this summer playing AAU at the highest level with North Tartan. The most noticeable change is how much more physical and aggressive she has become. Against high school competition on Sunday that change really stood out. Thul averaged 14 points per game at the Breakdown event and was a defensive weapon, as well.

[player_tooltip player_id="471360" first="Mya" last="Moore"] – 2026 guard, Orono

There were a lot of great point guards in attendance on Sunday, including the aforementioned Rose, Strum and Haabala, along with other Class 3A standouts like [player_tooltip player_id="296527" first="Aneisha" last="Scott"] of DeLaSalle, [player_tooltip player_id="339175" first="Brooklyn" last="Lewis"] of New Ulm and [player_tooltip player_id="296523" first="Kendall" last="McGee"] of Benilde. On this day, however, incoming freshman [player_tooltip player_id="471360" first="Mya" last="Moore"] made the most of her opportunity to run the show for Orono. She was everywhere! Mya has such tremendous feel for the game and she's got the ball on a string. That combination can be pretty effective, particularly when combined with exceptional quickness and mobility, nice lateral movement and very light feet. Moore makes everyone around her better, which is one of the reasons incoming sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="396440" first="Rae" last="Pearce"] had the best day we've seen from her to date. Moore also contributed 13 points per game herself. The combination of Moore and senior standout [player_tooltip player_id="108340" first="Lauren" last="Knudson"] gives Orono the kind of one-two punch in the backcourt that everyone is looking for.
