Continue ReadingTrenton is one of the most basketball-rich areas in New Jersey and the state capital has produced a number of great players over time. Keep in mind that we’ll be doing separate lists about players down the shore in Central Jersey and players slightly to the north with the over-abundance of metropolitan areas to go through. This article will be focusing on the top point guards in the Trenton area.
Rhian Stokes Rhian Stokes 5'8" | PG Ewing | 2024 State NJ – 5-8, Ewing (2024)
We’ve talked about Stokes at length on the site in recent months because of the success of her and Ewing. However, that wasn’t by accident as she runs the show for the Blue Devils and does a flawless job at it. Stokes is one of the more complete guards in the state, a triple-double threat that racks up steals at a rate higher that some scoring averages of players. She hits threes at an efficient rate, rattles opponents as she drives into the lane and makes her scoring opportunities count, especially at the foul line.
Simone Pintinalli Simone Pintinalli 5'5" | PG Notre Dame | 2024 State NJ – 5-5, Notre Dame (2024)
While Pintinalli was more of a shooting guard last season, we’re including her on this list because of the departure of graduating senior Nicole Villalta-Barrantes, last season’s primary point guard. With a number of impact players having graduated in the spring, that leaves Pintinalli as the team’s leading scorer and de-facto leader overall. She’s going to be stepping into a new position this season, taking more responsibility, but seeing how confident she was as a shooter last season makes us confident for the fall/winter.
Kyla Glasser-Hyman Kyla Glasser-Hyman 5'6" | PG Hightstown | 2023 State NJ – 5-6, Hightstown (2023)
Glasser-Hyman and Stokes are very similar players in their dynamic play styles, all-around complete games and an ability to score unlike anyone else around. She might represent the latter point more, having averaged 21.1 PPG as a junior. Just a fantastic interior presence, a great player on-ball, who can create and facilitate. She’s masterful with the dribble and just makes opponents flat-out miss and look silly on the floor. Glasser-Hyman can beat you from three, from mid-range, down low, driving into the paint, on defense, really anything. She’s multi-dimensional and all-worldly.
Gillian Magner Gillian Magner 5'8" | SG Hopewell Valley | 2024 NJ – 5-8, Hopewell Valley (2024)
Magner took some considerable steps in the right direction as a sophomore for Hopewell Valley, becoming an immovable asset on the defensive side of the ball. As a 5-8 guard, she’s one of the better shot-blockers in the area and is equally good as a perimeter defender. On offense, Magner is taking her chances more often with the ball, building up her shooting from range. She’s taking more risks as a three-point and mid-range shooter while still driving the ball into the middle for close-range looks.
Kayla McCrea Kayla McCrea SG Allentown | 2023 State NJ – 5-6, Allentown (2023)
Another player who will be playing much more point guard this season than previously, McCrea had Brianna Schweitzer alongside her last season. She’s the lone dog in the backcourt this season with significant experience. AnnaBella Conti will have to step up into a bigger role as a guard, but McCrea is going to be running the show as a senior and has proven to be a reliable passer, good scorer and stellar defender. We’re going to be looking to see how much her production levels increase as the primary senior guard this season.
