I had a lot of notes from the event that I wasn’t able to get to in my initial articles, so I definitely want to hit on those now. I started by looking at some of the 2023 prospects that I saw this past weekend, but let’s now look at some of the players from the class of 2024!
Van Metre is quick and shifty when the ball is in her hands. She can handle the ball really well and she’s hard to stop as a defender. She has a great shot and she is able to knock them down from inside or out. Defensively, Van Metre was tough. She works hard and she can come up with steals in the passing lanes or on the ball.
Whited was one of the better defenders I saw on Saturday. She’s got a lot of speed and quickness, and she makes things extremely difficult on opposing teams’ ball handlers. Whited came up with quite a few steals and deflections. She also showed off her strong handles. She was taking care of the ball, locating teammates, and throwing some really good passes.
Highlights
Deere has great length. She has excellent form on her shot and she was consistently knocking down shots. Deere runs the floor and crashes the boards well. She was the ideal teammate also. She was making good passes and she wasn’t forcing stuff that wasn’t there.
Highlights
Heart over height. Gold was not one of the tallest players, but she played with a ton of heart. She was not going to be outworked. She has a lot of point guard skills. Her handles are strong, she sees the floor, she recognizes, and she makes smart plays. Gold recognized when she could get to the basket and she executed her drives so well. She also recognized when teammates were open and she got them the ball. She played well defensively as well.
Gulley is an intriguing prospect. She has good strength and she can really elevate to grab rebounds or get steals. She can really defend any position well. She was fantastic on the boards on Saturday. Gulley could be on the complete opposite side of the rebound and it still felt like she was somehow coming up with it. She showed her ability to score over defenders as well.
Highlights
Couch was doing a little bit of everything on Saturday. She was playing hard defensively and she was making stuff happen offensively. She made some excellent moves around the basket and was consistently able to score on her defenders. Couch was also knocking down shots. She showed that she has good strength and plays hard every minute she’s on the floor.
Highlights
Gober has good ball handling skills and she can really facilitate an offense. She sees the floor, she makes strong passes, and she’s vocal. Gober looked strong on her drives to the basket and she showed an ability to get to the rim or finish floaters. She also can shoot the 3. Defensively, Gober was applying good pressure and making it tough on the players she was guarding.
Shropshire is so long, so it’s impressive to see the way she can spread the defense with her ability to score inside and out. She recognizes when her teammates are driving to the hoop and she steps out to clear the way for them. When she stepped out, she was knocking down those jump shots when her teammates passed her the ball, including hitting 3s. Defensively, she makes it so tough to get clean looks around the basket and she rebounds well.
