The Class of 2023 as a whole has been quick to either narrow down their lists of colleges, or even choose their Fall of 2023 destinations. A lot of this can be attributed to a group of prospects and parents who has seen the aftermath of COVID-19, the additional fifth year for college players, and the effects the transfer portal has caused throughout all of college basketball, not just the NCAA Division-1 level. As I near an end to a number of articles I’ve written about 2023 lately, I wanted to point out a handful of other uncommitted prospects in the 2023 class. If you see someone below you believe has already made their college decision, please let us know so we can continue to update these reports. The following ladies are listed as combo guards in our current 2023 rankings, each fall between #101 and #225, and each is uncommitted to the best of our knowledge.
Trinity is about as tough-nosed and high-motor as it comes in this 2023 class. She is a littler undersized for how she plays, but at the same time she plays much bigger than she is. She can handle the ball and run/initiate offense, but she is a very good shooter/scorer who you want to run off of screens. She can fill it up from the perimeter, with range to about 25-feet. She’s also strong attacking the basket North/South. I also like her effort at the defensive end of the floor, where she can defend ‘1s’ and ‘2s’, plus she’ll rebound her position.
Lauren is a fluid and somewhat smooth combo guard who has grown a little and gained noticeable strength over the years. She’s another guard who has solid ball skill and the ability to initiate/run offense, but she’s much better served as a shooter/scorer. She slices into the lane often, and she can knock down a variety of pull-ups and runners over taller defenders. Additionally, she’s a very good perimeter shooter. Defensively, she uses her length and quickness to get her hands on a lot of passes, whether she’s defending on or off the ball.
Avery is a tough-nosed, high-energy guard who is always around the ball. When she was younger, I felt like she was more of a shooter/scorer. But over the past couple of years, she’s started to really embrace the point guard role. She has some strength at her size, she’s more so quick than fast, and she does a nice job of creating space. She can still shoot it consistently, and with range well-beyond the arc. But I like how she’s more aggressive off the bounce and putting pressure on opposing defenses. She’s also a pest as a defender herself.
Aliyah transferred from Concord to Marian over the Summer, and she should give an immediate boost to the Lady Knights’ backcourt. She has nice length, she’s a fluid/smooth athlete, and she possesses a versatile skillset. When she’s on the ball, she’s more of a nice game-manager who gets the ball where it needs to go on time, on target. At the same time, she is a very good perimeter shooter who needs little time or space to get it away. Defensively, I think she does a nice job of using her length and awareness, especially from “help-side”.
Not many people outside of Northwest Indiana are familiar with Payton, but she’s a quality small college prospect who I think several schools would be interested in. She has nice length, speed and quickness, and she plays with a competitive motor. She can slice to the basket and score a variety of ways, plus she’s a capable and consistent perimeter shooter. Defensively, she is scrappy, and she can pressure the ball the length of the floor or create turnovers from “help-side”. She should have another nice Winter for the Lady Trojans.
