The Class of 2023 as a whole has been quick to either narrow down their lists of colleges, or even choose their Fall of 2023 destinations. A lot of this can be attributed to a group of prospects and parents who has seen the aftermath of COVID-19, the additional fifth year for college players, and the effects the transfer portal has caused throughout all of college basketball, not just the NCAA Division-1 level. As I near an end to a number of articles I’ve written about 2023 lately, I wanted to point out a handful of other uncommitted prospects in the 2023 class. If you see someone below you believe has already made their college decision, please let us know so we can continue to update these reports. The following ladies are listed as small forwards in our current 2023 rankings, each fall between #101 and #225, and each is uncommitted to the best of our knowledge.
For those of you unfamiliar with Skylar, she is also a high-level soccer player, which is why you’ve likely never seen her on the grassroots circuit. Regardless, she is also skillful and talented on the hardwood. She has an extremely long frame, wiry strength, and she moves fluidly around the court. For DeMotte Christian (formerly Covenant Christian-DeMotte), she can take on a point forward role, create, and facilitate, or she can score the ball in a variety of ways by attacking the basket. She also rebounds as a wing, and she can defend multiple positions.
Brooke was a little overshadowed a year ago, playing for a loaded Crown Point team. However, she should be a key piece to their success this season. She is a long, wiry-strong athlete who moves fluidly around the court. She can play a point forward role as well and create for others, and she’s most effective attacking the basket. She does a really nice job using her length and athleticism defensively, plus she can defend multiple positions. I think if she can be a little more consistent shooting it outside, she’s a small college “steal”.
Rhylan is a big-time energy/motor kid who always seems to find a way to be productive. Skillfully, there isn’t anything she necessarily does better than anyone else, however she has a fairly balanced skillset and can contribute in different ways each game. Sometimes she can play bigger and rebound/defend inside. Other times she’s great in the mid-post. Additionally, she’s comfortable handling the ball and defending the perimeter. I think she’s one of those kids who small colleges love because they can play her in a number of roles.
I was able to see Hannah with her Scottsburg team in June, and with her travel team in July, and she looked leaner, more active, and healthy. She shoots the ball extremely well from the perimeter, and she needs little space or time to get it in the air. She can make shots from all areas of the floor, and with some range as well. Positionally, I’m debating if she’s more of a ‘3’ or a ‘4’, because defensively I think she’s better using her physicality and toughness to her advantage inside. Offensively, though, she’s definitely a wing you want to get open.
Brighton is definitely an under-the-radar prospect who I think several area small colleges would have interest in. She has really nice length, fairly fluid athleticism, and she plays with a nice motor. I would like to see her get a little stronger and be more aggressive to the basket, because I believe she has some ability, but she does a nice job of working the wings, long corners, and short corners, and knocking down mid-range jumpers and 3-pointers. She also does a nice job of using her length to be a versatile defender.
