This class boasts some of the top scorers in the state and a ton of talented players that are committed to play at the next level. As we look at the top 2023 shooting guards in the latest rankings update, the first 3 players we’ll discuss have already committed to play basketball at the D-I level next season and the other 2 both have a number of offers on the table. So, let’s take a look look at our top 5 shooting guards.
I feel like Hubert is about to have a huge senior season. She was Notre Dame’s 2nd leading scorer last year, and they have since graduated their leading scorer, as well as their 3rd and 4th leading scorers. While the Pandas have some young players that will step in to make up for some of that production, I believe Hubert could double her scoring average as well. She’ll have more scoring opportunities this season and I think she’ll take full advantage of those opportunities. The NKU commit is an elite shooter, shooting over 40% from 3 last season. However, she can also score at the rim, through floaters, pull-up jumpers, etc. She is definitely a player to watch for this season.
Highlights
You better not sleep on Shelton or how much she brings to the floor every time she plays. She uses her length and athleticism so well to constantly get deflections and steals as a defender. She also crashes the boards well and if you don’t locate her (and hold her off), she will come up with the rebound. Shelton has a lot of versatility to her game. Her skills as a floor general are really strong, but she is also effective off of the ball. Shelton can drive and finish tough baskets through contact and I think Bowling Green is going to be a really tough team to beat this season.
Dennis is another player that can be really effective at the point guard position or playing off of the ball. She does a little bit of everything for her Sayre team. Dennis is their primary scorer, especially when it comes to scoring ability, so I’m hoping to see her take over even more this season. She can finish with a defender on her hip and she does a great job of elevating over defenders to get her shot off. Her instincts are good on both ends of the floor and there’s a reason she will be playing Division-I basketball next year. If Dennis goes out and dominates in the way she’s capable of throughout her senior season, I expect to see some really impressive numbers from her this year.
Cooper is going to be one of the best teams in the state again this year and Freihofer is a huge part of that. Honestly, she is one of those players that impacts the game in major ways even when she’s not hitting her shots because her effort is unmatched. She plays so hard and she’s not going to give up anything easy as a defender. Freihofer has good strength and she can score at all 3 levels. She can finish through contact at the rim or knock down a 3 from outside of the perimeter. With the talent she has around her, expect her and her Lady Jaguars squad to finish out her high school career on a high note.
Smith is one of the most underrated players in the state. Her scoring ability is special. She can knock down shots from deep range and she gets her shots off so quickly. She shoots it at a high percentage and she’s smart with the ball. Smith is a very crafty player. She can handle the ball, she makes solid passes, and she can finish in creative ways around the basket. Smith is healthy and ready to finish out her senior season strong. I expect her to put up some big time numbers this season.
