This will include some schools outside of South Jersey, so do not be alarmed. With that being said, as we head into the 2022-23 New Jersey high school girls basketball season, here are some South Jersey Non-Public guards to watch.
Mia Gestosani Mia Gestosani 5'8" | PG Mount St. Mary | 2025 State NJ – 5-8 PG, Mount St. Mary (2025)
With the departure of graduating senior Olivia LaBruno, Mount St. Mary has a hole at the point guard position, but who better to fill that than Gestosani. She wasted no time getting acquainted to high school basketball as a freshman, proving to be one of the better pure scorers in the freshman class while also showing off range from beyond the arc. She has grown tremendously in maturity and poise, not shying away from opportunity or big situations. This being just her second year in high school, Gestosani has a high ceiling and very much can reach it.
Christina Liggio Christina Liggio 5'8" | PG Red Bank Catholic | 2025 State NJ – 5-8 SG/PG, Red Bank Catholic (2025)
Red Bank Catholic always finds great recruits for its program and Liggio is one of two impact freshmen that showed out for the Caseys last season. She’s an excellent three-point shooter, easily one of the top shooters in the 2025 class, and has carved a spot out for herself with great all-around offensive skill. We know that certain parts of her game will continue to improve as she hones in on specific things, but talk about a great start to her high school career. She’ll return as the second-leading perimeter shooter on the team and will get much more of that workload this fall.
Hannah Watson – SG, Holy Spirit (2024)
Watson was an unknown commodity as a freshman for Holy Spirit, but has done a great job maturing into this year’s team and becoming a go-to playmaker throughout the season. She’s a great shooter and her offense is majority-generated from the perimeter, having knocked down 30 threes last season. Her role as the “designated” shooter for Holy Spirit will most likely reprise as a junior, but Watson is just as confident a scorer inside the arc as well. With one full year of high school basketball under her belt, the sky is the limit for 2022-23.
Sophia Rutherford Sophia Rutherford 5'7" | CG Moorestown Friends | 2024 State NJ – 5-7 SG/PG, Moorestown Friends (2024)
Rutherford did a spectacular job over a relatively small sample size of a season for Moorestown Friends last year. This being her first year on varsity, what a playmaker and what a scorer she showcased as a sophomore. Averaging over 13 points a game, Rutherford became the backbone for MFS and carried the freight the entire way. The attention will be on her this season, but that didn’t phase her one bit as she found ways to dominate teams last season. A fantastic all-around player that can rebound and pass well and makes defense an important part of the game.
Macie Nugent Macie Nugent SG Gloucester Catholic | 2023 State NJ – 5-9 PG/SG, Gloucester Catholic (2023)
Nugent returns this season as the leading scorer and shooter for Gloucester Catholic and will have more expectations on her as seniors Angelina and Natalia Barrera both graduated in the spring. She was nothing short of great as a junior for the Rams and continued her growth on the offensive side of the basketball. Her game has developed greatly, able to create and score from a number of different spots on the court while directing the offense. Her ball-handling skills are really what has separated her from the pack and that’s a credit to the hard work she’s put in over the past year or so.
