I watched Buchanan defeat Edwardsburg by a score of 63-42 and saw Mattawan top Paw Paw 70-57. There were talented players on all 4 teams and the teams that came out on top in each game faced good competition and were forced to play winning basketball. Let’s look at 10 players that stood out in these 2 games.
There wasn’t much that Carson couldn’t or didn’t do in this game. My pen ran out of ink trying to mark every single rebound and blocked shot. She had to be pushing a triple double. Carson worked so well off the high post and we saw some good court vision when she passed over top the D.
Austin was very good in the win against Edwardsburg. She played at a quick pace and with an aggressive style to her game. Austin finished well at the rim, was good in transition, and was a ballhawk on defense.
Averie Markel
Averie Markel
Markel paced her team in the game notching 11 points. They were well earned points as Buchanan locked down the lane. Markel did a nice job finding ways to score. She’s definitely a player to watch as the season progresses.
Maddie Poduba
Maddie Poduba
Poduba played very hard and had a definite impact on the game. Her highlight was probably in the first half when see was on the wing, recognized an open lane and attacked it by scoring with a floater.
Elsmore was very impressive in her team’s win. You could tell that she takes on leadership responsibilities with the team. Elsmore was a 2 way star in the game swiping at least 5 steals and almost hitting a double-double in points and rebounds. It almost felt as if Elsmore wasn’t going to let her team lose.
Highlights
Zhia Martin
Zhia Martin
Martin led her team in scoring with 18 points. She added 8 steals as well. Martin played a downhill game using her athleticism to make plays on the offensive end. She had some impressive takes to the rim off the bounce and finishes with body control to top them off.
Siena Coleman
Siena Coleman
Coleman showed some really nice upside to her game. She finished with 7 points and a handful of rebounds. It would be huge for the Mattawan team if she can become another dependable scorer. I think Coleman has the ability to get that done.
Grace Mitchell
Grace Mitchell
Mitchell made a statement in this game. She finished with 19 points and showed off a very nice stroke from behind the arc. She has smooth and free movement which speaks to her upside.
AJ Rickli
AJ Rickli
Rickli finished with an 18 point and 13 rebound double-double. She really put in work on the offensive glass and that provided her with some quality looks at the rim. As Rickli develops some touch inside, her game could absolutely take off.
Savanna Rickli
Savanna Rickli
Same last name, different sister, nearly the same results down low. Savanna scored 14 points with almost all of them coming from close to the rim. She added 5 rebounds as well. The Rickli’s could develop into a VERY formidable low post.
