With a field sporting some talented teams and players, this is one of the top girls tournaments during the holiday season in Southern California. I was able to stop by on Monday, Dec. 26 for the first day of the tournament, and here’s a look at some additional standouts that I saw.
1. Emma Perez – Granada Hills Charter 2024
Perez is a mobile center who can score in a variety of ways. She plays well in the pick and roll setting the screen and rolling to the rim. Nice touch around the basket and she can finish well through contact. She’s able to step out and shoot the midrange jumper and she has consistent range out to the three-point line as well. She moves well off ball making strong cuts to the basket. Active on the glass. Defensively, she is active in the paint and challenges shots well at the rim.
2. Marlene Chavez – San Fernando 2023
What stood out the most to be about Chavez was her ability to make entry passes and consistently look for the bigs in the paint. Not many high school players can do that well and she sure can. She’s a solid point guard and a team leader. She’s able to play alongside another ball-handler off-ball as well. A real pass-first point guard. She keeps the ball moving and is unselfish. Able to shoot the three off the catch. Solid on ball defense too.
3. Lily Caddow – Trinity Classical Academy 2023
A Wheaton College commit, Caddow did a good job controlling the pace of the game. She can play both guard positions. She handles the ball and and was able to attack her defender off the dribble consistently. When she gets into the lane she is able to see the court and kick the ball out to open teammates when the defense collapses. She can break the defensive press too. Able to finish at the rim or she can pull-up and shoot off the dribble in the halfcourt.
4.

– Leuzinger 2024
Sarabia is the ultimate glue player. She’s able to score but her value comes from all the other things she does on the court. She’s an active defensive player on ball and she does a good job forcing turnovers. She rotates well defensively. Shoots out on the break and when she has the ball in her hands in transition, she’s always looking to make the right pass. She makes a lot of hustle plays chasing after loose balls and hitting the glass. Overall scrappy, tough player. Good catch and shoot from three as well.
