I got to see several teams in action this week, some for the first time. Other teams I followed up on since I have not seen them for a while. In the first of four microupdates for Week 7, I will look at some of the talented point guards I saw this week. Also to come this weekend, I will look at combo guards, forwards and post players.
Persha Edwards
Persha Edwards
Enjoyed watching the Middies play this week and they had a few kids who caught my eye. Persha is a point guard with a good desire to keep getting better as she showed me a good work ethic on the floor. She has good length from her position and excellent handles. She was a good leader and ran the Middletown offense well. Impressed with her demeanor on the court.
Kierston Latham
Kierston Latham
It was the first time I have seen them play this season, as they showed me some talented players. One who caught my eye was Kierston who was impressive to me as a point guard who was a very smooth player for a sophomore. She distributed the ball well and controlled the game with good handles and pushed the tempo. Defensively, she displayed good on-ball skills with quick hands. Talented player.
Abbi Evans
Abbi Evans
One of the biggest attributes for Abbi is her ability to defend. She is a disrupter on the ball and in her game last week, she had five steals in the first quarter to set the tempo. She has quick hands and plays low to the ground but she is a strong quick player. From the way she plays the game, she loves a challenge. She is not a scorer but she plays her position well. Recovered from ACL injury last season.

Taylor Evans Taylor Evans 5'5" | PG Amanda Clearcreek | 2026 OH
Was impressed with her game at the PGH Freshman Showcase last fall, and she continues to show her talent at the high school level. Taylor has nice handles with both hands and she is good at creating angles with straight lines drives. She plays the game effortlessly and uses the most of her chances. She is a big three-point threat, plays strong and is a solid competitor. Good basketball IQ.
It was the first time I had seen Sami play this season, and she is the leader of a team who is 10-1 and leading their division in the Miami Valley League. She is currently the leading scorer in the MVL and just does what Sami does…. she scores, can defend and leads. Loves to play downhill and draw contact, can bust you from behind the arc and is vocal. Floor general. Ranked in the top 25 in the latest PGH ’23 rankings. (featrure photo above)
In the same game I saw Sami, lining up against her was an impressive young lady who played likely her best game of the season, of which I have seen most of her games due to my coverage of Tippecanoe. Kenzie made a statement last week, draining five three’s and displaying quickness and toughness that she is known for. She just makes plays happen, can distribute and create on the defensive end.
Marina Nelson
Marina Nelson
They say it only takes once to play well in front of the right people, and let me say Marina did that last week. Her coach gave me a heads up on her talent and for the first time seeing her, I was impressed. She can shoot with range, handles the ball with poise, she is a sophomore with confidence. She is an athletic PG who plays smart and takes the play that is given to her on the court. She jumps the passing lanes well on defense and has a good future!
