McKenna Sievers McKenna Sievers 5'4" | SG Newell-Fonda | 2024 State IA
The Newell-Fonda guard plays in an intense system, utilizes multiple players off the bench, tries to create turnovers, and scores quickly off those turnovers. The junior plays high up in the zone, and when the Mustangs create turnovers, Sievers finds herself with the ball in her hands most of the time and usually makes the right decision. Sievers is second in the state in assists, with 7.3 per contest.
The Estherville Lincoln Central guard is one of the most dynamic guards in 3A. Stokes is one of the few in the state who keeps defenses guessing. The sophomore can penetrate and use her threat to finish well with either hand to draw teams in and find her open teammate or draw a foul. I love her ability to create, and it’s evident by how often the ball is in her hands. Her coaches and teammates trust her to make the right decision, and that’s why they’re one of the best teams in 3A.
Laynee Hogan Laynee Hogan 5'9" | PG East Buchanan | 2025 State IA
The East Buchanan guard plays with a level of physicality that most defenders can’t handle. When she decides that she wants to get to the basket, there isn’t much defenses can do at the 1A level other than foul her. Not only can Hogan get to the basket, but she can shoot and create. Hogan constantly finds her open teammates and attacks spaces that draw defenders, which opens up opportunities for her teammates to get open looks, and Hogan will find them. Everything she does on the floor translates anywhere. Nothing she does works because she’s at a small school. I thoroughly enjoy watching her play.
Vanessa Bickford Vanessa Bickford 5'9" | PG Dallas Center-Grimes | 2024 State IA
Bickford is a prototypical Dallas Center-Grimes guard. She makes excellent decisions with the ball, doesn’t turn it over, and makes passes. The passes Bickford makes are on time, get to her teammate when they need to get there, and passes it to her teammates how she needs to get them the ball. The reason her team is succeeding is because their guards are making good decisions with the ball and making plays every trip down the court.
