This article will feature some of those games and their outcomes along with some other games highlighted as well that were in action last yesterday. Enjoy!
(#4) Valley VS (#9) Waukee Northwest
A top 10 ranked matchup between Valley and Waukee Northwest took place at Valley high school last night. Valley ended up winning the game convincingly by an end score of 58-28. To start the game the Tigers jumped out to a fast start with a 14-8 lead going into the second quarter and a 25-12 lead at the half. This trend would continue into the second half and lead the Tigers to an overall 30 point victory when everything was added up. Moving forward there is a lot of hope with this Valley program as they have competed in every game played so far this season. Up to this point they have had to play the #1 Johnston Dragons right before winter break and only fell by 3 points while also playing against #2 Pleasant Valley the very next night, where they would go on and lose by 1. On the other side of things you get a good look at Waukee Northwest and see that they can make some waves as the regular season comes to an end and they playoffs begin. The Wolves are led by Junior Sadie Maas Sadie Maas 6'0" | C Waukee NW | 2024 State IA , who tends to be efficient and successful near the rim. Maas, has been handling the duties of the enforcer inside the paint for this squad as they attempt to run their offense through her whenever given the opportunity. Both of these teams we will be hearing about again in the future as I can’t wait to see what type of energy they bring once the playoffs begin.
Brynne Katcher Brynne Katcher 5’11” | SF Valley | 2023 State IA has been the leading scorer for the Valley Tigers. A Tigers team that has a good and efficient roster from top to bottom, 1-10. Katcher is currently averaging just over 12 PPG while also racking up some healthy numbers in rebounds and assists every game on the way to leading her team to an 9-3 record. This season she is playing the forward position for the Tigers and it fits her well. She is listed at 5’10 so when looking at the next level she will be looked at to play the 2 or the 3 guard depending on the division and program. In my eyes the Tigers play in the hardest women’s conference in the state and are holding their own. Behind Katcher and rising star guard Elise Jaeger Elise Jaeger 6’1″ | PF Valley | 2024 State IA , this team can get some places and have some real success once the playoffs start this year.
(#8) Dowling Catholic VS (#5) Ankeny Centennial
A game that I spoke about highlighting going into last night was the matchup of DC VS Centennial, in a top 10 contest that has two stacked rosters. Well this one didn’t disappoint but most likely shocked a few who saw the final score afterwards. Dowling Catholic won the game and had it won right from the tip off. To start the contest the Maroons jumped out to a 22-10 start while eventually going up 29-22 at half-time. To begin the second half the Jaguars tried to apply pressure and start off hot but that didn’t go according to plan as the Maroons won both the third and fourth quarter, eventually ending the game with a final score of 57-40.
Ava Zediker Ava Zediker 5’10” | PG Dowling Catholic | 2025 State IA did her thing last night for the Maroons on the way to leading her team to victory. Zediker, an elite scoring point guard, had 29 points on 8/12 shooting while going 3/4 from behind the arc. A big majority of her points came in the form of free throws as she went 10/10 from the stripe on their way to victory. I have touched on Ava in prior articles and her play making ability all season. It takes just one three pointer to fall for her and it could easily be over for the opponent that night. Last night she did a great job leading and score while also getting others involved with her ability to pass. It’ll be fun to keep watching this team into the playoffs as they are going to shock some teams moving forward. I’m sure of it.
(#13) Roland-Story VS (#11) South Hamilton
Another big, top 15 matchup that I thought could turn into a good contest was between Roland-Story VS South Hamilton, in a make-up game from early December, and it did not disappoint. The South Hamilton Hawks took care of business at home by coming out on top against Roland-Story, 54-55. Going into half time the Hawks were almost down by double digits but put together a 26-13 third quarter to take control going into the fourth, where they would eventually finish the job and win the game. Leading the Hawks was Makena Galetich who scored a game high 28 points on 8/17 shooting overall. Following suit for the Hawks was Hallee Feaker Hallee Feaker 5'9" | PG South Hamilton | 2023 State IA who tallied up 20 points of her own in this one. Between these two players they ended up going a combined 20-28 from the line in the victory. For Roland-Story, who had a good lead for some time in this one, they just need to settle down and worry about one game at a time. They have great team structure, coaching, and athletes. All they have to do is put it together and finish the game in front of them and they will be just fine moving forward.
Makena Galetich
Makena Galetich
Makena Galetich was to much to handle for Roland-Story on Tuesday evening. She ended the game with 28 points on 8/17 shooting, while going 10/14 from the free throw line. All season long Galetich has been putting up some big numbers for her Hawks Team, averaging 16.5 PPG, 6.8 RPG, and 4.1 APG, ranking her in the top three throughout all categories on her own squad. An unlikely advantage that she uses to beat her opponent all relies in an extremely quick first step off the dribble. With this move she gets a good advantage going toward the rim and does a good job seeking out contact on the way there. Looking toward the rest of this season I’d be surprised if this team isn’t super successful as they have every weapon to make a big impact in the long run before this season is over.
Halle Feaker had herself a light double double by putting up 20 and 10 in their win last night VS the Norsemen. Feaker scored 20 points on 4/18 shooting on Tuesday night but made it up from the free throw line by going 10/18 from the stripe while putting up 10 rebounds at the same time. This stat line is a very impressive one in a big time win but if you have been following this team throughout the entirety of their season you would see that she is almost averaging a double-double at 20 and 10, on a nightly basis. The same thing that I said above goes here as well, this team could really put it together and make a big splash this year before its all over. They will be an underdog once the playoff starts and I think that makes them more dangerous than ever.
