Florida is often a state that is dominated by guard play. Here are some front court players that caught my eye in January.
Joelle Wilson Joelle Wilson 5'11" | PF Miami Senior | 2023 FL (Miami Sr HS) – 5’11 Forward – Class of 2023
Wilson is a silent assassin that fills up the stat sheet in so many ways. She is an efficient offensive player that shoots a high percentage from the field both finishing in the paint and stepping out to 15 feet. Her mobility, versatility, and soft hands really stand out amongst other front court players. She keeps a cool, calm, and collected demeanor, never getting too high and never getting too low.
Lety Vasconcelos (Montverde Academy) – 6’7 Center – Class of 2023
Lety is a tremendous presence inside both in height and mass. She is very hard to move out of the paint and often controls the paint on both ends of the court. She does a good job establishing low post position on the block and has the ability to finish both with her left and right hand. If she is in the paint, and around the rim inside five feet, she can grab balls above defenders and keeps it high and finishes around the rim well.
Taelynn Carey (Westminster Academy) – 6’1 Forward – Class of 2023
Carey is long, athletic and smooth. She can play inside and out, attacking off the dribble from the wing and the baseline and identifying situations to go inside and play physical. She finishes well in the paint, rebounds the ball well on both the offensive and defensive glass, and she has the ability to outrun her opponents in transition.
Shanaii Gamble Shanaii Gamble 5'10" | SF Somerset Academy Silver Palms | 2024 State FL (Somerset Silver Palms) – 6’0 Wing / Forward – Class of 2024
Gamble is versatile and can play both inside and out. She can play on the wing and attack off the dribble and knock down perimeter shots from 15 feet, the high post, and even step out to the 3-point line. When the matchup allows, she can also go inside and dominate the paint. She is at her best attacking off the dribble going right and running the floor hard and scoring in transition.
Vivian Iwuchukwu Vivian Iwuchukwu 6'3" | SF Montverde Academy | 2024 State FL (Montverde Academy) – 6’3 Forward – Class of 2024
Iwuchukwu is an uber talent who has elite athleticism and a ton of talent. She is one the most dynamic players in the country with a super high ceiling with a ton of potential. She showcased raw, natural talent and athleticism with a dynamite body! She is one of the most coveted prospects in the country due to her ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor, her consistent effort and energy, and her big time potential as I believe her best basketball is ahead of her!
Lourdes Da Silva Costa Lourdes Da Silva Costa 6'3" | PF Monteverde Academy | 2025 State FL (Montverde Academy) – 6’3 Forward / Center – Class of 2025
Da Silva Costa is an extremely intriguing prospect who plays limited minutes coming off the bench for the extremely talented and loaded Montverde Academy roster. She is 6’3 and mobile who can rebound the ball on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor and finish in the paint. She is a bit of a hard evaluation as she often plays 8-10 minutes a game in the games I have seen her play but her talent and upside really stand out and is someone that I look forward to seeing play more and continue to improve as her role and minutes increase during her time at Montverde Academy.
Kayla Nelms Kayla Nelms 6'1" | PF Miami Country Day | 2024 State FL (Miami Country Day) – 6’2 Forward – Class of 2024
At 6’2 Nelms is one of the most efficient offensive players in the country who shoots a high percentage from 3. She is Miami Country Day go to play who is constantly dropping 20+ points per game, by getting it done inside and out. While she has the ability to knock down trail 3s, Nelms does not just hang out on the perimeter, she goes inside and plays physical in the paint, displaying her soft touch and ability to finish with both her left and right hands.
Mya Thomas (St. Thomas Aquinas) – 6’2 Forward / Center – Class of 2024
Thomas continues to improve every time I see her play. She has great height and mass, with soft hands, soft touch, and good footwork. There are not players with her combined height and mass making her a unique prospect. While her offensive skill set is still developing, post players above 6’1 are in high demand and Thomas is surely a name that college coaches need to get familiar with.
