Continue ReadingOn Wednesday, February, 15th I attended the Sweet-16 or Round-2 playoff game for the 6A Girls Conference. We had the #10 Corona del Sol Aztecs traveling to the #7 Gilbert Tigers.
This was their third game played between the two schools. The most recent game was close as Gilbert won 44-39 on February 2nd.
Last night it was a very low scoring game to start off with only a 16-8 score at halftime.
The Tigers started raining 3’s in the third quarter and extended their lead to 38-20 heading into the 4th quarter. The Aztecs did close the gap for only a 39-30 lead with 2:50 to play for the Tigers but Meisha Caserio Meisha Caserio 5'4" | PG Gilbert | 2024 State AZ closed the deal with her strong play plus made FTs by Morgan Evenson Morgan Evenson 5'9" | SG Gilbert | 2024 State AZ to give Gilbert a 47-34 win.
Here were some of the standouts from the playoff match-up.
Meisha Caserio Meisha Caserio 5'4" | PG Gilbert | 2024 State AZ Gilbert
A scoring point guard who handles most of the ball pressure. She consistently creates many shots for her teammates plus for herself. She can drive and kick it to her shooters and handles the ball well with either hand. She can hit the three off the catch plus burst into the lane and use floater. The son of a coach plays from the game from the neck up. 15 points including 3 threes.
Aspen McClees Aspen McClees 5'10" | PF Gilbert | 2026 State AZ Gilbert
A strong framed wing forward is the teams post presence but this girl is a bigger SF. She is a rebound chaser in and out of her area and anticipates well for steals. She has a knack of getting downhill and creating the contact to get fouled or score. She is an excellent passer and can run the break like a point forward type. She can shoot it from mid-range and can spin off of her defender with her nice handle. She can defend inside and out on the perimeter.
Morgan Evenson Morgan Evenson 5'9" | SG Gilbert | 2024 State AZ Gilbert
A wing forward with skill. The lefty shooter has some toughness and has a thicker frame. She can get to the paint and kick it to a teammate as she is a very unselfish player. She can dribble drive to the rim and uses picks to her advantage. She iced the game essentially with free throws down the stretch plus hit a big three when the Aztecs were getting comfortable.
Emma Carrasco PG 5’2 2025 Gilbert
A lead guard with a scorers mentality. She can catch and shoot at a good rate. She plays smartly off the pick and roll game and makes good reads. She has a quick release on her three point stroke and plays well off of Caserio. She made four important threes.
Leila Josey PF 5’7 2025 Gilbert
A glue girl is an undersized power forward. She is a rebounder chaser and defends multiple positions. She moves fluidly from end to end and runs the court and can even step out and hit the catch three.
Callie Hinder Callie Hinder 6'6" | C Hamilton | 2026 State AZ Corona del Sol
One of the tallest girls in the AIA happens to be a freshman. She is little sister of senior brother Oliver (who is 6’9 and dad who is 6’11). She moves very well from end to end and has very soft hands and touch around the basket. She passes out of a double team well and rebounds the ball at a good clip and then will keep it high. She can face-up to the elbow and in and will chase blocks. She will finish with either hand and has a nice hook shot. She scores on offensive rebound put backs and even shows off a drop step. She unofficially had 22 points and 15+ rebounds.
Maddie Mitchell PG 5’5 2023 Corona del Sol
A point guard handles the pressure for the team mostly and will dime her teammates. She moves without the ball and cuts when she should. She is a good post entry feeder and sees the court. She can use her speed to blow by and get to the rim and is a plus rebounder her position.
Deven Kircher SG 5’5 2024 Corona del Sol
A scoring two-way guard has a nose for the ball for steals and rebounds. She can drive by her opponents with her left or right hand with a nice first step to get to the basket. She can score on offensive rebounds put backs.
Brielle Phelan PF 5’11 2023 Corona del Sol
A physical post player can rebound and run the floor. She scores it best around the basket and plays within herself. She will pass out of the post and doesn’t get rushed. She does play conservatively and knows what she can do best to help the team.
Amarie Garza SG 5’5 2024 Corona del Sol
A scoring guard who can dribble drive and score. She can give a hard ball fake and get to the rim. She is capable of creating her own offense and plays a cerebral game.
