Eighteen teams mixed with boys and girls groups descended onto Lester Raines Court for a day of hoops.
Doddridge County and Wirt County girls’ basketball started the day off with an early struggle ultimately turning into a runaway for the Bulldogs. Doddridge, which will face Williamstown in the LKC Championship game for the first time in 36 years, was led in scoring by LKC Player of the Year Candidate Abby McDonough Abby McDonough 5'7" | CG Doddridge County | 2023 State WV . She stole the show and here are a few players who joined her:
Hadleigh McGoskey Hadleigh McGoskey 5'4" | SG Ravenswood | 2024 State WV , Ravenswood, G, 5-4, Jr. – Sometimes Hadleigh McGoskey Hadleigh McGoskey 5'4" | SG Ravenswood | 2024 State WV just feels like making big waves during a game – like Monday against Tug Valley. She just got that feeling and then there was no stopping her. McGoskey piloted her group as the Red Devilettes eeked out a close victory against the Panthers. Though she was the smallest player on the floor, she wasn’t bothered by it at all. In fact, she thrived off being the one who had to make the sneaky and clever moves to get her points. She wasn’t only rewarded with a team-high 22 points, but she also earned her place in Ravenswood history with her 1,000th point on a free throw in the first quarter.
MacKenzie Browning MacKenzie Browning 5'7" | SG Tug Valley | 2025 WV , Tug Valley, G, 5-7, So. – Kaylea Baisden left MacKenzie Browning MacKenzie Browning 5'7" | SG Tug Valley | 2025 WV with a good example of how a leader acts and plays on the floor. Browning has heeded those words and lessons. Maybe they aren’t always on display, but more often than not you are getting a Browning rising to the challenge. Take Monday for example. Tasked with being the primary scorer for the Panthers, she soared. She soared high. She soared far. She soared often. Her scoring game was on-point early and often. She finished with a game-high 22 points or better than half of Tug’s 40 points.
Abby McDonough Abby McDonough 5'7" | CG Doddridge County | 2023 State WV , Doddridge County, PG, 5-8, Sr. – Abby McDonough Abby McDonough 5'7" | CG Doddridge County | 2023 State WV may have only had three points after one period, but she didn’t let it slow her down. Not one bit. Instead, she went to work and enjoyed a great game. When her team needed assists, she dished. When her team needed rebounds, she rebounded. When her team needed to be reminded to box out, she did that too. Basically, McDonough did what she always does while leading the Bulldogs to a victory over Wirt County. Over the first eight minutes, she patiently learned the Tigers defense and watched as her teammates established an early lead thanks to the attention afforded to her by the Tigers. She then turned on the jets in the second quarter. She tallied 10 points in the quarter as the Bulldogs started to run, and never really looked back.
Emily Gola, Doddridge County, SG, 4-11, Sr. – Doddridge County needed their Bulldog to be a Bulldog. She succeeded. Picture a successful game, now blow that up into a great game – that is how Gola performed. Maybe, she wasn’t perfect, but who is on the court. She was solid. She was consistent. She was hungry. She was Gola. Time and time again, she either hit a 3, caused problems for her offensive assignment, or made life difficult the entire Wirt County defense with her defensive energy.
D.J. White, Wirt County, W, 5-6, Jr. – Emily Gola and Abby McDonough Abby McDonough 5'7" | CG Doddridge County | 2023 State WV didn’t get to have all the fun in the Wirt County and Doddridge County matchup. They were joined by the Tigers’ DJ White. Repeatedly. Quarter after quarter, she didn’t let the Bulldogs pull to far away. When the scored, she responded. When they pushed, she pushed herself. Largely, they weren’t going anywhere without her. She finished with a team-high 21 points and led the Tigers with energy. She’s only a junior, so coaches interested in her will have another year before they can get this Tiger on a Division III or NAIA court.
