Division 5 had two standout teams at the state tournament who met in the title game in Blair-Taylor and McDonell Central. All the players who deserve to be on the all-tournament list come from those two units.
Marley Hughes
The future Viterbo guard picked up where she left off in the Resch Center last year. Hughes was the best distributor and helped the Macks make the most of each of her team’s possessions. The senior was the most consistent performer, and she brought it in each of the games her team played to take home McDonell’s first gold ball.
Aubrey Dorn
The six-foot sophomore from McDonell was one of the surprises of all the events at the state tournament. Dorn’s size and quickness gave both teams the Macks played problems, and she used that to help her team close out possessions and surprised a handful of people at the Resch Center with her ability to play with her back to the basket.
Abby Thompson Abby Thompson 5'6" | CG Blair- Taylor | 2023 WI
In Blair-Taylor’s run to the state tournament, the Wildcats’ backcourt was one of the most fun to track over the past few years. Thompson was excellent over the two games at state. She created turnovers on the defensive end of the floor, shot the ball confidently, controlled the tempo in the Wildcats’ win over Wabeno/Laona, and shot the ball well in the state title game.
Lindsay Steien Lindsay Steien 5'9" | CG Blair- Taylor | 2023 State WI
The attention that Steien demands shows how talented she is and how much respect D5 coaches have for her. Steien got face guarded in the state title game and still found ways to put the ball in the basket. Steien is tough, has a knack for scoring the ball, can beat her defender off the dribble, and isn’t afraid to get into her dribble pull-up game.
What I love most about Cooper’s game is that she finds ways to help her team without scoring the ball. I didn’t think she played her best at state, but she still made winning plays on both ends of the floor. Cooper can run her team’s offense, defend the other team’s best player, rebound the ball, create live-ball turnovers, and consistently make the correct basketball play. Everything that Cooper does leads to her team being as successful as they can be, and that’s something many talented kids never figure out.
