Not much. Not much, at all. She’s used to them by now and knows how she can trust her teammates to get her in good positions to score the basketball. The pressures are really afterthoughts. Just take a look at Friday morning’s semifinal matchup against Doddridge County. After being severely troubled by a constant attack, she waited on the fouls to rack up for the Bulldogs and then she went on the attack. Free from the bonds of the Bulldog team, she punched and punched and punched. Points went in, her teammates cheered, and the Mountain Lions rolled to the championship game. What I liked most about her in this game was her willingness to let the game come to her. That wouldn’t have been the case in years past, especially one year ago. But, she patiently waited as Doddridge ran out of fouls and then went to work with her entire team. During her semifinal performance, she racked up 19 points, 21 rebounds (9 offensive), 2 assists and five blocks.
Abby McDonough Abby McDonough 5'7" | CG Doddridge County | 2023 State WV , Doddridge County, SG, 5-8, Sr. – With two of Doddridge County’s three lead seniors in foul trouble, McDonough made sure she rose to the challenge. Not just in terms of points. Not just in terms of leadership. Not just in terms of big-game energy. But, in terms of all of it. Yes, she really delivered a vintage McDonough performance in her final game on a high-school court. You saw a little bit of everything in her game. She cheered on, she encouraged her teammates as she loved each and every moment on the court until her final buzzer sounded. When it was all over, she tallied 19 points, five boards, a pair of assists and seven steals.
Grace Harvey Grace Harvey 6'0" | C Summers County | 2024 State WV , Summers County, P, 6-1, Jr. – It isn’t always how you start, it is how you finish. After a rough first six minutes of action Grace Harvey Grace Harvey 6'0" | C Summers County | 2024 State WV found herself and went off to the races. There were no more jitters. There was no more pressing because her group was one win away from the state championship game. There was just Harvey playing her game. What a sight it turned out being, too. She scored 17 points, including a big 7-of-10 effort from the foul line, to go along with 12 rebounds, an assist, and 2 blocks. Coaches, if you are looking for someone who shows up no matter the occasion, you should take a look at Harvey.
Sydney Baird Sydney Baird 5'7" | CG Webster County | 2023 State WV , Webster County, SG, 5-9, Sr. – Sydney Baird Sydney Baird 5'7" | CG Webster County | 2023 State WV saved one of her best performances for her very last game. Indubitably. Matched up against the defending state champion and with her team not given a chance. No. 23 did what No. 23 does. She led her team. She encouraged her team. She did what Sydney does – she competed. She competed with heart. She competed with courage. Basically, if she was unhappy with her final game, it should only be because her team didn’t win. Other than that, she
