I wanted to take some time though to recognize some middle school names to put on your radar and watch over the next few years. Here’s a snapshot of some young kids already having a big impact on South Dakota Girls Basketball!
Izzie Eide – Centerville – 5’6″ G – Class of 2028
A true enthusiast of the game, Izzie is going to be a fun one to watch for another 5 years. She played a big role at the varsity level for the Tornadoes of Centerville, who earned a bid to the SODAK 16 this year. Her energy and enthusiasm for the game are one of the most impressive I’ve seen and she looks destined for a great career. Her range is well beyond the 3-point line and she hits them with impressive confidence. She has a great downhill attack and uses her body well to finish at the basket. She’s a solid rebounder on both ends and puts pressure on the ball on defense. Keep an eye on Izzie, she’s going to be a good one!
Taylor Reuvers – Vermillion – 5’1″ G – Class of 2028
Taylor was an absolute spark this year for the Tanagers and was one of the most entertaining players in the state! She’s 5’1″ but has zero fear and impressive self-confidence. Time after time when her team needed a turnover on defense, or a crucial basket on offense, she delivered. She’s a scrappy defender who gets up in the passing lanes and creates havoc for ball handlers. Lightning speed allows her to convert defense to offense and she makes great decisions in the transition game. Her shooting confidence and range are stellar for a young kid and she can knock it down from the outside with consistency. Taylor Reuvers will be a household name in South Dakota basketball for the next several years.
Lexi Hanson – Vermillion – 5’9″ G – Class of 2028
Lexi is a young, up-and-coming guard that will partner up with Taylor Reuvers over the next several years. She has great handles at a young age, a nice perimeter shot, and with more minutes at the varsity level, looks like a really solid prospect!
Morgan Sheppard – Flandreau – 6’0″ G – Class of 2028
Morgan has to feel some pressure at times being the little sister to a D1 committed sister and teammate, but she handles it well and is developing into a star, painting her own future while getting to compete alongside sister, Claire Sheppard Claire Sheppard 6'1" | SF Flandreau | 2024 State SD . At 6’0″ and athletic she has one of the most physically ready basketball builds in this class and has plenty of years left to develop. She handles herself well on the offensive end and can create shots for herself or others. Keep your eye on Morgan a player who will garner attention from colleges at an early stage of her career.
Kami McLellan – Dupree – 5’4″ G – Class of 2028
McLellan will benefit from being a player called up to the varsity level already at such a young age. She has a nice perimeter game with ball-handling ability, court vision, and high IQ. On defense, she can defend the perimeter with a solid closeout and the ability to contain the dribble. Keep your eye on this young lady as she gets more opportunities to showcase her skillset!
Kori VanDerWerff – Platte-Geddes – 6’0″ F – Class of 2028
A six-foot 7th grader who has a lot of basketball skills and IQ and is already contributing on her varsity team gives a lot to be excited about, and that is just what Kori is doing! She’s long, moves well, and can score inside and out. Add in her ability to block shots, rebound on both ends, and defend, and you have a really exciting player to watch for another 5 years!
