Continue ReadingThe 2023 AAU Season is finally here and some of the top players in North Dakota and Minnesota are ready to lace um’ up and hit the hardwood this Summer with their respected teams. The AAU Season for many teams kicks off in some closer tournaments like the Minnesota Spring Classic, State Prelims or even at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD preparing for larger tournaments like the Chicago Nike Tournament of Champions, or Des Moines Summer Finale.
This last weekend the ND Pro 17U took a trip out to Minneapolis for the Minnesota State Championship Series and played in the Division 3 “Pre-Lims” over May 5th-7th going 2-1 with wins over MN Heat 11th Vang and Crossfire 11th Pearson with 1 loss to Minnesota Stars in a hard fought 62-54 battle. The ND Pro 17U team has a wide variety of some of the best talent in North Dakota and Minnesota from guards down to the post they have a little of everything on their roster and are a force to be reckoned with. Let’s take a first look at their roster, and last weekend’s performances.
Karley Franks Karley Franks 5'8" | SG Fargo Davies | 2024 State ND : 5’8 G- Franks is a shifty guard who has an excellent release especially off the dribble, but also has a great ability to come off the screen and knock down the catch and shoot jumper from mid-range, to beyond the arch. She is a proven shooter (38% this year for the Davies) but also packs a punch defensively on opposing guards. Over the weekend she added 27 points with 5 3-pointers made and was a key scorer for her team. Franks is a sound ball player that keeps getting better every year, it will be exciting to watch her develop over the summer and show off her skills.
Abbey Dutke Abbey Dutke 6'1" | SF Dickinson | 2024 State ND : 6′ F- Dutke is a versatile player all across the floor. At 6′ she can play on the inside, but also doubles as a shooting guard as well. She has good ball handling abilities, can finish through contact but has also shown her abilities to hit shots inside and out as well. What really stands out about Dutke is she does MANY things well on the floor and does them right. Shes a hard worker, who loves the game and is always improving her game. Last weekend Dutke showed off her range with knocking down 4 3-pointers, 2 against Crossfire and 2 against the MN Stars. She may not be the biggest scorer on the team, but she is impactful on both sides of the floor, a quality player we can all appreciate.
Paige Breuer Paige Breuer 5'7" | CG Bismarck | 2024 State ND : 5’7 G- There isn’t enough good things to say about Breuer as a player. When it comes to a hardworking, gritty player who gives her all every game and spends endless hours in the gym refining her skills, that defines Breuer. Breuer is a surgical guard who sees the floor incredibly well, but also comes with a deadly shot that she has showcased time and time again. When she’s on the floor she makes plays happen, or she is going to connect on one of her shots. Another great skill she has picked up is the ability to drive the lane and use her floater off the glass for the easy bucket. Last weekend she really put on a scoring putting up 37points total and knocking down 5 treys as well. She can hit them from inside or outside, and is a floor general. If you haven’t seen her play, I would recommend taking a look. She’s one of the best guards in the Dakotas, and she’s proven.
Jaya Henderson Jaya Henderson 5'10" | PG Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich | 2024 State ND : 5’9 G- Jaya is a solid sized guard who is a true go getter on the floor. Offensively she is a smooth shooter, but also can finish at the rim through contact and can easily draw the foul. Outside of shooting she also has a keen eye for passing, finding the lanes and skilled ball handler. Defensively she is a tough defender who can create turnovers, but also can read the offense well and pick off passes. Last weekend she tallied up 18 points in 3 games connecting from inside but deep as well. I can see her adding quite a few more points this weekend, and over the summer.
Maggie Shorma Maggie Shorma 6'1" | SF Fargo Shanley | 2024 State ND : 6’1 F- Shorma has a TON of upside to her game, on the offensive end and defensive end alike. Over the last year or so she has really improved her overall game and became a bigtime player. From her elite passing abilities up the court, or her shooting skills she is one that stands out on the floor. At 6’1 she can rip down rebounds, put them back up but also can knock down mid-rage to long shots. Shorma can pack a big punch when she is on the court for any team and is a player that can definitely play and be impactful at the next level. She has a great motor, and gets after it the entire game.
Brenna Martin Brenna Martin 6'1" | C Thompson | 2024 State ND : 5’11 C- Martin is a true work horse on both sides. Her overall toughness and ability to get inside and do work really stands out. She will be a big part of the ND Pro Offense and Defense when she’s on the court, and for all the right reasons. At 5’11 she can pull down rebounds, crash the boards and knows how to flat out do work in the pant offensively. She moves very well for being nearly 6′ and having her on the team mixed with Felchle and Shorma…is a huge bonus for NDPro.
Mataeya Mathern Mataeya Mathern 6'0" | SG Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier | 2024 State ND : Another Top player in ND you can’t say enough good things about. Mathern is an elite scorer, that is also very creative when doing so. Mathern’s ability to get to the basket, pull up and knock down shots, or even make hard drives to the basket really stand out. Shes a fluid, yet shifty guard that can really do damage on the floor all around. Mathern’s game has improved tremendously over the last few seasons, and I don’t expect that to stop anytime soon. Last weekend she put up 13 points for ND Pro which is a little smaller than usual, but don’t let that fool you, she can drop big numbers any night of the week. She will also be playing for ND Attack 17U this AAU season, and is a player to keep your sights on, she is a next level player without question.
Brooklynn Felchle Brooklynn Felchle 6'3" | C Bismarck Legacy | 2025 State ND : 6’3 F/C- We all became familiar with Felchle after this year’s High School season and for all the right reasons. This year she had her break out year earning 2nd team All-State honors and was one of the best shooting players in ND, not to mention top rebounders as well. Felchle has really improved her game over the last year and will be a name we will all know coming into next season. Shes has great size to her, a nice touch around the rim and has really sharpened her shooting abilities from 8-10′. Yes, she can put up shots all day around the block for easy put backs, but her overall shooting abilities have really taken off this year and I don’t expect that to go away anytime soon. Felchle is a top-level player that is getting D1 interest and for all the right reasons. I expect her to have a great summer, and an even bigger year next year hunting down that 1000-point mark. Last weekend she tallied up 21 points and a bunch of boards for ND pro. If you get a chance to see her play, I highly recommend it…we will hear her name plenty down the road.
Teigan Malo Teigan Malo 6'0" | C Fargo South | 2024 State ND : 6′ F/C- Another top-tier interior player from the EDC joins the NDPro roster for the summer. At 6′ Malo packs good size, footwork, speed and is a big presence in the paint on offense and defense alike. Malo is a proven rebounder in the EDC as well as scorer as she tallied up 300+ points for Fargo South this season and you can expect that number to rise in her senior season. Malo is a gifted player who moves very well around the rim and on the floor, finishes strong at the rim and can be a wreck for an offense on the defensive end of things. She has a great motor and a work ethic to match, last weekend she had a game high of 8 points vs MN Crossfire. She has a lot of good qualities to her game that really make her stand out. Another skilled player that should be getting plenty of looks this summer.
Julia MacAdams: 5’11 F- MacAdams is a good-sized versatile post who moves her feet really well and has a good knack at making herself involved in plays. With her size and strength, she knows how to use it to muscle her way between defenders, pull down rebounds but is also a very skilled shot blocker. An overall good contributor on both ends of the floor she will be another big asset to the team on the interior. She has a lot of good qualities to her game that will only improve with more time on the court.
Brynlea Mahlen: 5’9 SG- Mahlen is a speedy, quick and crafty guard who can fly up and down the court all game long. Her overall athleticism really stands out and how energetic she is on the court. She has fast hands, sees the floor good and also is a skilled passer in the lanes. On top of that her ability to shoot the ball stands out and has shown she can take and make bigtime shots from all over the floor. I like her style of play, and she knows how to “get things done” on the floor. Another highly skilled guard that is fun and impressive to watch.
Ava Redding: SG- Redding a quick snappy guard who can force turnovers and play tough defense on some of the best guards is another asset to the roster for NDPro. She packs a good punch with her speed, shooting abilities but is a lockdown defender and can create havoc for other teams. She has a lot of good qualities to her game, its hard to pick one that really stands out. She does many things well on the floor and makes her presence known. She will play a nice role in the guard spot with her quickness, ability to force turnovers and shooting skills.
