Yesterday, I decided at the last minute to check out some games at the Grassroots Memorial Weekend Shootout at the Hammond Sportsplex and Purdue University Northwest in Hammond. It wasn’t a big event in terms of quantity, but there were out-of-state programs like Example Sports, Michigan Drive Premier, the Illinois Lady Lightning, and Michigan Crossover in attendance. The Indiana field was much smaller, but I was able to catch a couple of Always 100 teams, a couple of the City Elite teams, a couple of OPS teams, plus the 17U Region Rebels . Below is a quick look at five Juniors who played well when I was able to catch them in action.
Lindsay is a really nice, athletic wing prospect who isn’t as well-known statewide. She has a wiry-strong frame, great length, and she moves well in most directions, including being somewhat bouncy. She has a nice jump-shot, with range well beyond the 3-point line. She can handle the ball in transition, create a little in the halfcourt, or even run/initiate offense like a point forward at times. Defensively, she uses her length and athleticism well to take away angles, and she causes a lot of deflections/steals. She will likely step into a major leadership role for the 59ers in 2023-2024.
Andrea is another prospect who wasn’t as well-known, but she has played grassroots ball this Spring in front of several coaches/scouts. She has great length, a wiry frame, and she absolutely competes each possession. She could definitely stand to get a little stronger, but she plays much more physical and aggressive than she looks. She has nice mid-post skill, she’s willing to post on the block, and she has a nose for the ball and is always around the action. Defensively, her team needs her to defend the paint mostly, but she has the physical ability to come out on the floor and defend the ball some, too.
Highlights
Carly had a solid Sophomore season for the Lady Bombers, and she is an intriguing college prospect because of her size and skill. She has broad shoulders, length, and she’s a fairly fluid athlete for her height. She can post around the block, plus she has touch and likes to knock down open jumpers from the perimeter, but she is probably best suited for mid-post play. I really like the fact that she has some inside-out to her game because of her size and her jumper, but it could also benefit her to add a more dynamic, change-of-direction handle to beat aggressive defenders to the rim.
Paulecia is always electric and fun to watch. She isn’t very big, but she’s extremely quick, fast, and explosive. She is a water-bug playmaker who can fill it up at times. She is actually more of a ‘2’ than a genuine point guard, but she does have a fairly dynamic handle and can create offense for herself or teammates. Her touch from the perimeter has improved over the past 18 months, but I think as her shot selection comes along, she will shoot much better percentages, because she does have skill and ability. I also really like her on-ball defense, as she can hawk it in every direction.
Divine attended our Top-250 event last Fall and showed potential, then had a really nice high school season, adding scoring and a lot of hustle plays for the Lady Wolves. She is extremely long, wiry, and North/South fast. She has track-like speed end-to-end. Offensively, she is still best attacking the basket off the dribble, but she is working on her touch facing the basket to the 3-point line. Defensively, she plays with a nice motor, will get after it when guarding the ball, but she also finds ways to affect the passing lanes with her length and picks up deflections/steals. She rebounds very well, also.
