That magical year was 1977 and the leading rebounder that year was none other than Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who had 1,090 rebounds for the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1976-1977 season.
That same year in Class 5A (this report’s featured class) Wichita-North won the girls’ state championship with a 23-1 record knocking off Hutchinson and ending its perfect season.
Here is a look at five players from Class 5A who are coming off big junior seasons and look to continue to post large rebounding numbers as seniors in 2023 and 2024 and perhaps lead their team to a state title.
Carly Dameron Carly Dameron 6'2" | C Eisenhower | 2024 State KS , 6’2”, C, Eisenhower (Goddard)
Dameron averaged 6.7 rebounds per game as a junior. There was a significant gap between her defensive (104) and offensive rebounds (36). The Eisenhower High School product also averaged 13.8 points per game. She is a solid defender as she averaged 2.1 blocks per game and she can also score from the outside. She is currently ranked No. 88 in the Prep Girls Hoops Rankings for the Kansas Class of 2024.
Emilee Hall Emilee Hall 5'9" | SF Great Bend | 2024 State KS , 5’8”, PF, Great Bend
Hall averaged 6.3 rebounds during her junior season with the Panthers. She scored 10.3 points per game to go along with her rebounding production. Hall has a really long reach and she can score by moving to her right or left. She is ranked No. 136 in the class of 2024 in Kansas.
Alana Shetlar Alana Shetlar 6'1" | PF Andover | 2024 State KS , 6’2”, SG, Andover
Shetlar is an impressive athlete. She is six-foot-two and plays shooting guard, but she can move inside and score as well. She averaged 5.9 rebounds per game as a junior. The Andover prospect also scored 8.3 points per game. She has yet to commit but does have multiple college offers including one from in-state Pittsburg State University. She is the No. 9 ranked player in the Class of 2024 in Kansas.
Hayden Snodgrass Hayden Snodgrass 5'9" | CG Andover Central | 2024 State KS , 5’9”, SF, Andover Central
Snodgrass is a two-sport star who could play collegiately in both basketball and volleyball. She averaged 5.7 rebounds per game and represents the highest-scorer among this group averaging 14.4 points per game during her junior campaign. She plays club volleyball with Shockwave and plays club basketball with Southwest Elite. Snodgrass is ranked No. 62 in the Prep Girls Hoops rankings for the class of 2024 in Kansas.
Paige Thexton Paige Thexton 5'7" | SG Great Bend | 2024 State KS , 5’7”, SF, Great Bend
Thexton gives Great Bend two players on this list of top rebounders. She finished with a 5.7 rebounds per game average. She works hard to get her boards and is a hustle player for the Panthers. She is a three-sport star as she plays libero for the volleyball squad and is a right-handed pitcher and middle infielder for the softball team. Softball might be the sport that gives her the best chance to compete at the college level.
