Five years ago, when I first started with Prep Girls Hoops, I introduced different areas of the state and their top prospects. I wanted to again work through that this Fall and offer you a much more detailed look at the Hoosiers State’s different regions and the prospects who should shine this Winter throughout those regions. This article will focus on the ladies just East of Indianapolis, all the way to the Ohio border, specifically from Fayette County, Hancock County, Henry County, Rush County, Union County, and Wayne County. There are 18 total schools spread throughout those six counties, with an even balance of schools in Classes 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A.
The area saw a great deal of Class 3A success in the mid-2000s, with Rushville finishing as the state runner-up during the 2009-2010 season, Mount Vernon (Fortville) finishing as the state runner-up in 2011-2012, and then Mount Vernon (Fortville) returning the very next year to be crowned the 2012-2013 Class 3A State Champs. The Combination of those 18 schools have provided nice talent over the years, with a number of girls moving on to college basketball of all levels. Recently, players like Ally Madden (Blue River Valley 2022), Annika Marlow (Rushville 2022), Kathryn Perry (Shenandoah 2021), Lexi Shelton (Mt. Vernon 2021), Hannah Farrell (Greenfield-Central 2020), Jordan Reid (New Palestine 2020), and Cameron Tabor (New Castle 2019) have represented their counties well. Madden and Tabor were named Indiana All-Stars in their respective classes.
Still, though, there are a number of girls who go underrecruited throughout their careers, and this is an area where small colleges can find some real gems, plus there is typically a Division-I prospect in most graduating classes from these six counties. With that said, I wanted to take the time to highlight a handful of girls who may not often grab the spotlight, but who deserve their share of recognition for their basketball abilities. All of these girls are strictly from Fayette County, Hancock County, Henry County, Rush County, Union County, and/or Wayne County.

– You don’t get to see Ruby much, if at all, during the grassroots season, because she is also a track & field and volleyball participant for the Royals. She has broad shoulders, wiry strength, and really nice length. She runs the floor well in transition, and she tries to play physical at the rim. In what time I have seen her, she has shown some mid-post skill, but she is more of a back-to-the-basket scorer with rim protecting abilities defensively. Last year she averaged 8.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game.

– Maren is part of a solid and very deep class of 2025 prospects for the Lady Red Devils. She is a long, wiry, and fairly fluid forward who can play inside or out. She has the size, height, and length to battle for boards and defend the interior consistently. However, offensively she seems more comfortable around the perimeter, and she has nice touch to 3-point range as well. If she continues getting stronger and working on being dynamic off the dribble, she could become a real steal for some small college.

– Chaney has some similarities to former Lady Cougar Hannah Farrell. Chaney has broad shoulders, she’s strong, and she’s a really nice North/South athlete. She began her high school career as more of a mid-post forward, but she has done a nice job of developing her handle and making her perimeter jumper much more consistent. I also like the energy she plays with and her ability to defend multiple types of wings and forwards. She has the potential to be a 20p & 10r kid each time out this year.

– I’ve really enjoyed watching “K-Rae” and getting to understand her game over the last year. She is so long, athletic, and energetic, that it seems like she is always around the basketball. She has the ability to handle the ball in transition and make plays on the move like a point forward, plus in the half-court she can attack the basket, or she can knock down open rhythm jumpers. I also like her ability to defend multiple positions. As she continues to learn how to change speeds, she will be even more dangerous.

– Ava is a skillful and hard-working point guard on a very good Class 2A team. She has some length, solid strength at her size, and she’s a nice all-around athlete. She does a really nice job of taking care of the basketball, initiating the offense, and finding open teammates in positions to score. At the same time, she can attack the basket North/South, and she was a 34% 3-point shooter a season ago. Defensively, she leads the team in steals and can put pressure on the ball or cause problems from one pass away.
