A few minutes northeast of Charlotte – another event will see the confluence of the two Carolinas. Many of the area’s premier high school freshmen will take part in this year’s Prep Girls Hoops Carolinas Freshman Showcase.
Cox Mill HS in Concord will serve as the site for this year’s festivities – and it will also host the following week’s North Carolina Top 250. We previewed a few of the names that will take part in an earlier article. Let us spotlight a few more.

Over the past few seasons, fans of the 3A Warriors have become used to winning seasons from their girls program. With Harrison as part of the 2023-24 rendition of East Wake girls basketball, it may not be long before those winning ways are restored. East Wake has seen an increase in wins over the last three seasons from three to nine to 10. Harrison is listed at 5-foot-5 which denotes that the bread and butter of her game is what she gets accomplished in the backcourt. The Warriors graduated a bevy of seniors from the 2022-23 version, meaning Harrison will sure to be a focal point of what is shaping up to be a new-look East Wake bunch.

Herndon will be embarking on a high school career with a 3A Spartans program that graduated five seniors from last season’s rendition. In addition, two of those seniors shared team captaincy duties. Expect Herndon, with her 5-foot-10 stature to create an imposing presence for Southern Durham in the frontcourt. That height comes in handy for many a big who is looking to establish themselves in the painted area as a rebounder and scorer. Herndon is sure to be no exception to the rule. Herndon is also beginning her high school career on a team with expectations – the Spartans finished 23-6 last season.

It does not take a genius to figure out that Wren MS is a feeder school for Wren HS. With Howell having concluded her career with the middle school team, the time has arrived for Howell to take her talents to the high school ranks. Howell participates in multiple sports – including volleyball to go alongside what she gets accomplished on the basketball court. Howell is listed at 5-foot-6 and places plenty of emphasis on ball handling and setting up an offense. Coach Pamela McGowens is looking for pieces that can allow the Hurricanes to maintain its lofty standing as one of the 3A class’ top teams. Howell could be one of those pieces. She is a name that rings a bell from this summer given she ran with Upstate Rebels on the AAU circuit – including during this year’s Prep Girls Hoops Circuit in the Triumph Region.
Speaking of teams with expectations, one must not look any further than a 5A Mauldin team looking to defend its state crown from last season with a still relatively young core. Jones, in addition to basketball, also partakes in track and field events. Prep Girls Hoops also saw Jones earlier this offseason at the LBI Spring Invitational. Jones has participated on the grassroots circuit with Upward Stars 3SSB. Ball distribution, shiftiness and connecting on 3-pointers are among the strong points to her game. She made her presence known last season as an eighth grader with the 5A state champion Mavericks and she is looking for even more once the 2023-24 season commences.
