Continue ReadingFreshman Showcase season for 2023 is beginning to wind down and transition into Top 250, but not before a few more areas have their turn on the court.
One of those areas is the Carolinas – the site of one of the final five Prep Girls Hoops Freshman Showcases to take place across the country. Others are slated to take place in Texas, Minnesota and New England throughout September as well as in Missouri in early October.
We have previewed a few of the scheduled attendees in a couple of earlier articles in advance of Saturday’s festivities which will emanate from Cox Mill HS in Concord. Without further adieu, here is a spotlight on a few more.
Here is a name Hoop State hoops aficionados will want to watch not only because of her own vast skillset, but the team she will be playing for. Joseph will wear the uniform of a 4A North Meck team that finished with a robust 27-3 record in 2022-23 (undefeated at home). Joseph will be among one of the taller participants in Saturday’s Prep Girls Hoops Freshman Showcase as she stands at an imposing even six feet. Along with her height advantage, her wingspan can disrupt an opposing team’s passing lanes and create additional possessions for her team. Scoring in the post, rebounding and blocking shots are also strong points to her game.
Highlights
Marley Mangum
Marley Mangum
Here is a name familiar to Prep Girls Hoops given the stellar showing her club team – Upstate Rebels – put together during the Prep Girls Hoops Circuit. Mangum made her presence known at the Music City Showdown and at the Triumph Region Finals where her team finished a perfect 4-0. Mangum places plenty of emphasis on handling the ball and limiting turnovers. The speed she presents when on the court is another positive attribute to her game. She plays with an excellent feel for the game with an ability to connect on her attempts from the midrange. Mangum is setting herself up nicely to be an excellent addition to 5A Byrnes.
Mann spent this past spring and summer wearing the uniform of Carolina Clutch 2027. Mann’s plan is for the momentum from the club season to translate into a successful freshman campaign at 3A Daniel. She has a great deal of speed and quickness which can come in useful when looking to make plays in the transition game. Mann understands how to find lanes to the rim and deliver strong finishes at the basket. She also knows how to convert defense into offense and can get creative with those finishes at the cup. Mann and her R.C. Edwards MS teammate Jordan Carey Jordan Carey 5’9″ | SG Clarksville Christian | 2028 MD will be worthwhile additions to the Lions.
Marissa Mitchell
Marissa Mitchell
Western Guilford MS was where this young stock riser previously played. Mitchell will soon wear the uniform of a 4A Western Guilford team that, last season, had a successful 14-12 campaign by its standards. She previously played club basketball with Phoenix Thunder Select. Mitchell is listed at 5-foot-9 and can display her versatility with her ability to play productive minutes either as a guard or at the three as a small forward. Her ability to find driving lanes to the basket keeps many a defender on its heels and opposing ball carriers find it difficult to get around her with the defense she plays.
