In all seriousness though this team returns 4 out of 5 starters with the loss of Jamie Bopp hitting fairly hard. Jamie averaged 12 points, 3.7 assists and 3 steals a game. A disruptive talent that one and when you needed a stop in the clutch, she was on it. A defensive hound that will be missed this season. On the flip side though, the Bulldogs return 2 top tier scorers and players in Karleigh Kadoun and Halle Nelson who seems to be one of those players you feel has been there “forever”. Karleigh is coming off a breakout freshman season that had her averaging nearly 14 points and 2.3 steals a game while shooting close to 40% from the field. If she can keep those numbers going up she’ll be a top tier threat that the Bulldogs need in navigating through a steep Region 1 play. Karleigh has got a quick first step and she can beat you inside and out. A tough competitor that is only going to get better as the seasons go on.
Karleigh’s counterpart in crime will be Halle Nelson. A tough athletic matchup that can play at both ends of the court. Halle is really impressive though with a nice touch around the rim that just seems to fall. She’s long, skilled and poised on the court. If you’re planning on trapping this team this year, just make sure you have someone getting back if it’s broken because 10 times out of 10, you’ll have Halle under the rim with an athletic catch and soft shot, putting 2 on the scoreboard. I honestly think she’s a player that’s a walking double-double and defensive anchor on the defensive end. I’m truly excited to watch this one play for her senior year.
Aside from the notable 2 we’ve mentioned Sargent also has Amber Kjar and Emma Bixby who are silent scorers that easily go for a combined 20 by the end of the game. Emma has a nice set jump shot and has proven to be deadly from beyond the arc. She’s a player that often comes off a screen from an inbound pass and gets the go-ahead bucket. Amber is the opposite in being a set big that plays big and aggressive. She’s got a nice mid-range game, but aside from that is getting her buckets in the paint. This duo is going to be a handful as they play well and work hard.
In the conclusion I think this Bulldog squad has a legitimate shot at making a run for a state title birth. I think the thing that will slow them down is their lack of depth. With a couple rising sophomores I don’t think it’ll be enough to beat a deep Oakes squad… Unless Sargent has an unsuspecting freshman emerge, I see them taking second just behind the Tornadoes in a close game. Then again maybe they’ve got a game plan for keeping players in the game when needed the most. I think to no surprise this will be a tough squad to beat again this year.
