The energy in the gym was top notch and anyone in attendance was blessed to see high quality ball from an awesome group of hoopers. One of the main take aways from the event that stuck with me was the quality of shooting that was shown by several different players. Shooting off of ball screens, catch and shoot situations, creating and shooting off the dribble, and impressive long range skills were all on display throughout the showcase. Here are the ” Standout Shooters” that caught my eye at the Texas PGH Freshman Showcase.
Prisha Kolhe
Prisha Kolhe
Kolhe lets the game come to her. She is very patient and I honestly didn’t see her force up a bad shot all day. Has a textbook shooting form and is always relaxed when getting into her shot. Her silky-smooth jumper was really enjoyable to watch and she can catch fire quickly if she’s left open. When evaluating her, I first took notice to her long ball and range, but as the day went on she settled into some nice dribble drive moves and was able to pull up from mid range with success. A very consistent showing from the free throw line topped off a great overall display of shooting from this 2027 hooper.
Brittan Richey
Brittan Richey
Brittan was one of my favorite players to watch at the showcase. Has a knack for being in the right place at the right time and showed great court awareness all day long. A high percentage, high volume shooter is what you get with Richey. She nailed threes while toeing up the line and was also able to step back a good 3 or 4 feet and hit from the collegiate three-point line. Range is hard to come by with younger players but she proved to be an accurate long range sniper time and time again. Has a nice step-back move to compliment a pretty quick release and is deadly if she’s able to set her feet comfortably. Should get plenty of opportunity on the varsity level with her school team and I’m confident that opposing coaches will have to key up on her as a part of their strategy. If they don’t, this freshman is sure to make it rain…bring your umbrellas to the game folks.
Kaylin Brannon
Kaylin Brannon
A very heads up player that is always looking to make the RIGHT play. Never tries to do too much and stays in her lane, letting the game flow in her direction. Brannon, a very well-rounded guard has a lot of different tools in her basketball bag but she makes my Standout Shooters list for a few reasons. First off, she is not afraid to shoot the ball. A lot of times you see defenders closing out hard and shooters get discouraged and put the ball on the floor. Not the case with Kaylin. She was confident in letting it go with a hand in her face and showed a nice smooth follow through. Secondly, she never passed up an opportunity to get a shot off when the ball was swung her way. Understood that the extra pass was made to her for a reason, let it fly. Lastly, when the bigs on her team were busy rebounding, and her defender lost track of her, she would spot up nicely, showing her hands, awaiting a kick out pass to convert on open jumpers in extra possessions for her team. An overall nice job of “getting your shots up” in a showcase setting by this 9th grade baller.
Mady Walker
Mady Walker
One of the first hoopers I got to watch on the day, Mady immediately impressed me with her maturity. Squared up to the rim on every catch, making it known she was a threat to pull it anytime on the court, no matter where she stood. By the 2nd or 3rd game, opposing coaches were yelling “watch the shooter!” informing their team that Walker was dangerous if they were to let her get one off. A rhythm shooter that will get more confident as the game goes on and if you know ball, confidence is key when it comes to shooting. Another player with a textbook shooting stroke which is always nice to see with younger players. She was of course able to find success shooting from downtown but also displayed a few mid-range jumpers as well as a nice floater. A well-conditioned player which is always crucial for shooting late in games. Did not let fatigue disrupt her shooting flow later on in the day, another rare quality in a freshman hooper.
Miley Bates
Miley Bates
Bates showed great composure all day long. Never let anything get in the way of her positive approach to the game and showed how important being a good teammate is when it comes to team chemistry. A very unselfish player but did not shy away from the moment when it was her time to show her skills. Able to do several things for her team from the combo guard spot but it was her shooting that stood out to me the most when I was able to catch her team play. Knocked in a huge 3 ball that shifted the momentum for her team and caused her defender to play her more tightly in the next few possessions. Moved great without the ball which created more chances for her on the perimeter to get shots up. A sneaky player that can lose her defender and has a quick trigger to get shots off in a hurry if needed. Was impressed by how she shot through the bottom of the ball and held her follow through until her shots spun through the net. A coaches dream when it comes to being coachable and not letting clutch moments bother her at all.
Emma Jones
Emma Jones
Another “right place at the right time” type of player. In my experience as a coach and scout, that attribute is not gained accidentally by players. Jones has great court awareness and something I don’t get to mention much with freshmen, she understands SPACING. Knew when to hold on to the ball while things developed for her offense and knew when to get rid of it quickly when things were stagnant for her team. Played on a team that didn’t show much promise when it came to shooting the long ball but Jones picked up the slack for her team in that category heavily. Showed nice touch when shooting the rock and all of her jumpers had great back spin on them. Her great judgment of distance and soft touch had me thinking every single shot she took was going in. Very calm and collected when getting into her release and NEVER threw up a questionable shot. A great decision maker here and should standout in her freshmen class at Henrietta.
