Coach Speak: Farragut HS Lady Admirals Preview w/ Coach Mayfield

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In this edition of "Coach Speak," I spoke with Farragut HS head Coach Jason Mayfield about his 2023-24 squad. He stated how excited he was about this group's mix of both experience and youth. He noted offensively he loved how well they play together, their unselfish mentality, that they share the ball extremely well, and the fact they have a few high level scorers. He noted that defensively, they have a great mixture of quickness, toughness, and basketball--noting "I feel like we can defend at a high level."</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> is a 6'1 sophomore guard that is loaded with potential and high-level athleticism.  She was second on the team last year in scoring as a freshman.  She's already a high level shooter from the perimeter, and is developing in her ability to attack the rim and use her length to finish over defenders.  She's also an underrated passer as her size gives her angles of vision most players just don't possess.  Defensively, her athleticism and length give her the chance to be a game (Jr) is a 5'8 combo guard that that is multi-dimensional on the offensive end.  She's an excellent shooter that sees the floor well, and is a high IQ, unselfish passer.  She has an uncanny ability to get to the rim, and draw fouls send her to the free throw line (a truly underrated skill as it creates high percentage shots but also puts the opposition in foul trouble).  She's an extremely smart player that plays with a contagious team-first attitude, and makes u0022on time and on targetu0022 passes putting her teammates in a great position to make a play.  She's the type of player that makes a huge impact on winning in a multitude of (Jr) is a unique player in that she is small in stature, but has a u0022unique ability to finish around the rim in a variety of way.u0022  She's explosive off the dribble, and is exceptionally tough to stay in front of defensively.  She is developing in her ability to make the correct read once she draws help knowing where to make the next pass to, but Mayfield noted that her abilities as a playmaker have come a long way.  Not only is she extremely effective attacking the rim, but she's another u0022excellent shooter that can get hot passing diving on loose balls, etc.  She just makes winning plays.  He noted that he is able to play Vining in a multitude of roles defensively, and can even place her on opposing posts as despite her lack of size, she makes up for it with physicality and Offensively, they are full of high-level skilled shooters, ball handlers, and passers. They have kids that can both attack the rim and shoot a high percentage from three. Mix all that with their unselfish style of play, and the Farragut offense will be a lot of fun to watch.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Defensively, Farragut has a great mixture of length and athleticism. Coach Mayfield's groups always defend at a high level, and this year should be no different.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Winning the district will be a really tall task, but I expect Farragut to be a really tough draw every night. Winning 20-23 games, and advancing deep into the Region tournament is certainly doable.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
