Continue ReadingToday, we’re looking at players in the class of 2024 who, as of typing this out, haven’t committed to a school to play basketball at the next level. Many kids left in the state are talented enough to play at the next level, so let’s talk about some of them today.
There is something about kids who can create space for themselves off the dribble. Rankin is excellent at beating her initial defender off the dribble and using that space to put pressure on the defense. Every time she gets downhill, I’m always surprised at how strong she is and how good she is at drawing contact and staying balanced. Rankin’s skillset will have more value at the next level because she’s a kid you can give the ball to with seven seconds on a shot clock and ask to make something out of nothing.
Olivia Grothaus
Among kids who could end up in the WIAC, Grothaus is among the most intriguing, in my opinion. She has solid size at 5-11 and is a versatile two-way player. On the offensive end, Grothaus is equally the wing and is comfortable operating with her back to the basket as is on the perimeter. She does a good job getting to her right hand around the rim and uses her quickness to attack the hips of her defenders, and she can score at awkward angles. Defensively, she has the length and lateral quickness to defend multiple positions. Grothaus also gets in the passing lanes well and probably earns a steal per game solely on jumping passes.
Ava C Hanson Ava C Hanson 6'0" | PF Oak Creek | 2024 State WI
There aren’t many players who are as complete at the four as Hanson. The varied roles that she’s played make her one of the best forward prospects left on the board. Hanson has been a solid corner three-point shooter, passed well out of the high post, rebounding on both ends of the floor, and cutting. Hanson has done a little of everything. She’s a legitimate 6-footer with some switchability on the perimeter, so she’s not a kid you have to play drop coverage with on pick-and-rolls. She’s versatile, and coaches at the next level will love her all-around game.
Maddie Schopf Maddie Schopf 5'6" | SG Kettle Moraine | 2024 State WI
The Kettle Moraine guard has been making big shots for a few years. No matter who the Lasers have played or when they’ve played, Schopf has always seemed to show up when it matters most. Through the postseason, Schopf has always been someone the Lasers have counted on, and she’s answered the bell. There aren’t many kids as consistent as that.
