This is a squad that is no stranger to winning having now back-to-back 20-win seasons. So, you might be asking yourself what makes this team so special? It’s their ENERGY! They aren’t afraid to bring it on a nightly basis. Their patients on offense and tenacious defense makes this team tremendous competitors. With that being said it’s inevitable with high school ball to lose your seniors. The cougars lose senior captain and leading scorer Ashtyn Smith as well Taya Hornberger and Daisy Sparrow. These 3 combine for 33 points a game for the Cougars last season. So the question you got to ask is who do they return?
Adlyn Eng – Junior – Adlyn was the second leading scorer for the Cougars last year around 12 points a game 6 rebounds and 2 assists a game. She’s a long athletic guard that can play inside and out. She has great space to the floor and quick first step when attacking the rim. In my opinion this is such an underrated player that needs more attention to her name. She’s without a doubt going to have a breakout season for the Cougars this year.
Reagan Kjelstrup – Junior – Kjelstrup is another long guard that moves her feet well. She’s got solid handles and good balance. I’d like to see her dribble lower to the ground for how long she is. Kjelstrup has a nice motor for getting up and down the court and can also play inside and out, though would benefit from the weight room as she needs to get a stronger with bigger posts. Her stats last year were 5.7 points and 3 rebounds a game. The potential is there. I’m excited to see how this player does with an improved role this season.
Morgan Snyder – Freshman – A true freshman… Or should I say a soon to be true freshman. Morgan got varsity minutes as an 8th grader and really showed everyone why. She averaged 7.7 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds and 3 steals a game. An active player and that’s putting it lightly. One of the more impressive on ball defenders I’ve seen and when playing zone can guard 2 players at once. A smart ball player that understands space and pace at a young age. When we talk potential you gotta include this player and when we talk impressive freshman in the future she’s someone that we’re going to mention.
Gracelyn Vaagene – Junior – Gracelyn was a solid role player. She’s coming off averaging 2.7 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist a game. She’s a player that can hurt you from deep if you leave her open. Has a beautiful set jump shot and clearly a high desire to win. She’s a player that consistently will keep getting better through the next 2 years and I’m intrigued on how this season will play out for her and the work she’s put in this off season.
Lea Jacobson – Senior – A notable senior that plays with high intensity Lea will suit this year for her final ride with the Cougars. She’s a solid role player that comes in off the bench with that added energy that’s needed most and a player that every coach desires to be apart of their program.
Best of luck this coming year to the Cougars. This offseason I’m sure has been a big one for them to figure out the logistics of their team’s dynamic. There’s no question to the mind though that this squad is prepped and ready for another big year in a steep Region 3 play.
