Many of the athletes in this group have committed to basketball beyond their high school careers and some of the best prospects in the midwest reside in this class of athletes. This article will take a look at some athletes that stock is up on and will be names to watch as we head into the 2023-24 season.
Here are several seniors ready to lead their squads this winter who are climbing the South Dakota state rankings and making a name for themselves.
Aliyah McGovern-Harrington – Sioux Falls Jefferson High School, 5’5″ G
Aliyah is a talented guard at Sioux Falls Jefferson and looks primed for a big winter this upcoming season! She’s a fantastic perimeter defender who can be asked to guard other team’s best. She defends with grit and passion and has the ability to lock down talented guards. She is an excellent three-point shooter who does a really nice job getting her hands and feet ready to knock it down from beyond the arc if you give her space. Stock is up on this talented young lady on a talented Sioux Falls Jefferson team!
Jaxsyn Swift – Sioux Falls Christian High School, 5’10” G/F
Jaxsyn has ascended the rankings two years in a row and has been one of the biggest stock risers in this group from sophomore to senior year. She has a great set shot from the outside and is a consistent three-point shooter with impressive range. She uses her length to get her shot up and over the defense and can score off the dribble as well. On defense she has really nice length and plays hard. She can convert turnovers to points and does a really nice job finding opportunities for her team to score in transition. Big things coming for Jaxsyn this year!
Harley Johnson – Arlington High School, 5’7″ G
Harley is a dynamic guard from Arlington who had a great summer at the Sanford Sports Academy and is putting in the work to increase her stock. Harley is an absolute firecracker on the court who plays with high intensity and unmatched energy. This guard can get up in you defensively and makes ball handlers extremely uncomfortable. Pair this with lateral quickness and high IQ and you have one of the most efficient perimeter defenders in this class. On offense, she plays with a similar intensity and is an excellent dribble-drive player. She finishes well at the rim and gets her shot off quickly and consistently from the perimeter. High energy guard who is primed for a big senior year for her squad this winter!
Avery Orth – Wessington Springs High School, 6’2″ C
Avery is a force in the paint for Wessington Springs and is one of the top prospects on the interior in this class. She has turned in great performances at recent combines and appears to be one of the top true post players in the state. Her ability to physically impose herself on defenders inside the paint makes her a valuable asset as teams have to focus a large part of their defensive philosophy on limiting her paint touches. On defense, she is a presence around the basket and alters a ton of shots. Stock is up on this talented center!
Lucy Moore – Sioux Falls O’Gorman High School, 5’7″ G
Lucy had a great summer playing for the Network and is vaulting up the rankings in the Class of 2024! She recently signed with Northern State and the Wolves got a good one! She’s a do-it-all guard who fills up the stat sheet on both ends. On offense, she can knock down the outside shot, finish around the basket with contact, and create space for herself and her teammates. She’s an excellent rebounding guard who isn’t afraid of physicality and will mix it up in the paint. On defense, she is active and can grab multiple steals per contest. She does an excellent job moving her feet and slowing down perimeter opponents.
Ashlin Jacobsen – Freeman High School, 5’8″ G
Ashlin is an excellent shooting guard from Freeman and is heading into a pivotal senior year where she looks to be the feature of her team’s offense. She is a long guard that effectively contains the ball on defense and creates turnovers. She has great awareness and anticipation on defense and is a high-IQ player. She bolsters the perimeter play of her team with excellent three-point shooting consistency and creates space for her teammates to operate in. Ashlin’s combination of perimeter defense, natural length and athleticism, stellar outside shooting, and high IQ makes her a very well-rounded guard in this class.
Chandler Cleveland – Vermillion High School, 5’11” F
Chandler is a physically impressive prospect at 5’11” and athletic. Her versatile game features scoring ability, defensive versatility, and rebounding prowess. She can stretch the floor by knocking down open threes and does a nice job connecting on kick-out passes from the paint. She gets her shot off quickly and keeps defenses honest with her ability to hit from the outside. In transition, she does a great job of running the floor and finding angles to attack the defense and score. Her rebounding game is solid and at 5’11” and athletic she is a versatile defender capable of guarding multiple positions.
These talented athletes are primed for their senior year in high school basketball. All of these stock risers demonstrate the work ethic, improvement in basketball IQ, and development of their skill sets to rise up the rankings of their class. This group of talented young ladies will look to push their programs to success this season and are making great strides in their basketball careers.
