I had a chance to see some of the prospects in Volusia county during last years playoffs and over the summer in Louisville KY, Daytona, Fl, and Wesley Chapel FL. In this article we look at the seniors in Volusia county who are primed and ready for the upcoming season.
Calise Chisholm Calise Chisholm 5'11" | SF Deltona | 2024 State FL (cover) was a recent standout at the ENG Power 80 Showcase and will be a player to watch during the 2023 – 2024 season. Chisholm is long and athletic and thus a versatile player in the paint and outside as well. Chisholm can shoot the ball from all areas on the court and she is also dangerous in the transition game. She has the ability to secure the rebound, handle the ball, and take it coast to coast for the layup. Chisholm caught the attention of many at the showcase and will be looking to attract more attention this upcoming season.
Ya’Nija Lawson Ya’Nija Lawson 5'10" | PF Spruce Creek | 2024 State FL is a player that really stood out over the summer at the forward spot. Lawson is threat to score at every level on the court and she is a very good defender. I watched Lawson play as a Freshman in the Regional playoffs and she was primary an inside player who controlled the paint on defense and got the tough points on offense. Fast forward a few years later- Lawson has developed into a scorer at every level and can hit the three point shot at a consistent rate. She was solid during the AAU season this summer and has positioned herself as one of the top forwards in the 2024 class. Lawson is Senior Loading and we are looking forward to seeing her this upcoming season.
Anovia Sheals Anovia Sheals 5'11" | SF Mainland | 2024 State FL is one another prospect who I got to watch over the summer. Sheals is a player who knows how to score the ball. She is a very athletic ball player who is tough off the dribble, tough in the paint, and can shoot the short range jumper. She is also an elite rebounder who gets anything close in her vicinity. Sheals is a walking double- double machine. In the State Championship, she scored 25 points and pulled down 15 rebounds en route to a 5A State Championship. I saw a lot of impressive athletes over the summer and Sheals was as impressive as any.
Tia Dobson Tia Dobson 5'5" | PG Mainland | 2024 State FL is also one of the top 2024 guards in the state and the Mainland guard is poised and season loading for another great high year. I saw her over the summer at the Daytona State camp and she was a blur during the camp with speed and quickness galore. Dobson was doing it all: facilitating, shooting the three point jumper, throwing dimes and getting to the rim. She was also a menace on defense with her on-ball defensive skills. Dobson is no stranger and all of these skills were on display when she was also a key player in bringing home the 5A State Championship.
Regan Chappell Regan Chappell 5'7" | SG DME Academy | 2024 State FL is geared up for her final season and will look to leave her mark at DME . Chappell is a sound baller who can score the ball. She can shoot the three and she can knock down the midrange shot with the sweetest shooting motion you will see. Chappell can also run the point and play the shooting guard position. She does a good job getting in the passing lanes and gets her share of steals.
