La Cueva played a well-rounded game, executing in the half-court on offense, cashing in on transition opportunities and limiting 2nd chance points from the Hawks. Not to mention their tenacious man-to-man defense and lethal full-court press.
The Bears did a tremendous job of denying the ball, trapping ball handlers and securing skip passes. La Cueva had multiple steals leading to easy layups, especially in BLOB & SLOB situations. Adding fuel to the fire, Centennial had trouble all game containing the dribble penetration from La Cueva’s Eva Love Eva Love 5'9" | SG La Cueva | 2024 State NM and Jordyn Dyer Jordyn Dyer PF La cueva | 2026 State NM .
Love had a game-high 22 points, scoring at all three-levels. Eva was taking what the defense was giving her; If attached, Love would attack the cup. If given space, Love would shoot the 3ball (catch & shoot) and lastly if given a lane, she would slither in and draw contact.
Dyer, the sophomore standout looked like a safety over the top, reading cross court passes and jumping the passing lanes. Jordyn has great instincts and timing, utilizing her length and speed to get her hands on the ball frequently. Dyer finished with 19 points with 15 of them coming in the 1st half.
Guards Kiauna Romero Kiauna Romero SF La Cueva | 2025 State NM and Antonya ‘Toni’ Lucero chipped in with 6 & 5 points respectively, each displaying the ability to put the ball on the floor and create.
As for the Hawks, there were some encouraging signs despite the outcome. F/C Joy Hunt Joy Hunt 5'10" | PF Centennial | 2025 State NM , who had a team-high 8 points on the evening, was a bright spot. When Centennial was able to get the ball inside to Hunt, it resulted in a score and or opportunities for cutting guards. Hunt’s long frame allows her to both shoot over the top of defenders and see teammates. SF/G Audrianna ‘Audi’ Torrez finished with 7 points showing flashes of being able to create at the point of attack. Torrez also did a great job rebounding on both ends of the floor, finding a body and high-pointing the ball.
