For the girls it was Auburn, Liberty (Renton), Sumner, King’s, Lynden Christian, and the hosts Tahoma. I’ll have more players to check out from the event coming, but first, let’s take a look at some of the top guards on display.
Avery Hansen
Avery Hansen
Hansen blew me away with her activity and pace. She was off and running on almost every outlet, inbound off a make, and with her pace up the middle she forced defenders to step up quick and make decisions which opened up tons of passes to wings to shoot or drive for buckets. Defensively, she was an irritant all night. She did not give ballhandlers any room to set up plays or get any kind of flow going and was one of the most impactful players of the day.
There was a great example of her on court attitude when she threw a pass that got picked off, she sprinted over, cut off the ball, got her hand on it and forced an immediate turnover to reclaim possession.
Collins is listed as a point guard and definitely has the ball skills to make some plays with good body control and change of direction, but she also made a ton of plays in the paint and with her back to the basket. She showed a strong power dribble to get the angle at the hoop and made a ton of big rebounds inside.
The normally sharpshooter couldn’t get her shot to fall from mid-range for much of the game, but she showed a lot of other ways she can impact the game. Her speed with the ball put pressure on the defense, she was a feisty rebounder, and played tough defense. Even when her shot wasn’t falling, she proved to be an engine that could drive action and pace for the Spartans.
Anderson is a long guard with great speed who can weave through defenses, breaking presses and getting to the hoop. She’s got a real nice handle and was able to get a lot going to the hoop, using her shoulders to create space then square up for the shot. She also hit a couple of threes but there’s a more potential there for her to get more consistent from outside, and she worked hard all game.
Deyak is a crafty guard with some pace and strength who did a great job splitting defenders with the dribble and used nice footwork in traffic. She could finish herself but also showed good feel for diming up others off her drives and provided some real steady play from the backcourt.
Highlights
Rylee Jacox
Rylee Jacox
I loved the intensity she brought to the floor. Jacox came off the bench and immediately was stuck on the opposing point the length of the floor. Her effort and quickness were truly something to see, and she was one of the top ball defenders at the event. She sold out for 50/50 balls, dove for balls, and just competed at a high level.
