For those who don’t know, the Miss Tennessee award honors the best player in each classification (We will have a total of 6 of them: D1-A, D1-AA, D1-AAA, D1-AAAA, D2-A, D2-AA). The award honors the young lady who had the best regular season. Postseasons such as the district and state tournaments aren’t accounted for or are a part of the selection process. It’s purely based on the body of work done from tip-off of the first game to the final whistle of the regular season.
We have two more classifications to run down and in this article we look at the 1A Miss Tennessee basketball finalists. In this class, there were three dominant players for the majority of the season. Hence why they are the 3 finalists chosen for this prestigious award. Don’t get me wrong, there were some other notable young ladies who could hoop, but these young ladies really tipped the scales. Though the winner will not be announced until March 12th, it could go either way on determining who will be the winner in this class.
Without further ado, here are the 2023-24 finalists for the 1A Miss Tennessee Basketball award.
Haley Bailey (5’9/ Sr./ G/ North Greene)- Well, she is a stud of an athlete for one. Kid plays 3 sports and starring in all of them (softball, volleyball, and basketball). A true competitor, she plays each and every game as if it were her last. Averaging 19 ppg and 9.4 rpg per game, she was the leading catalyst for her ball club this year. She stepped up in a big way this year, showing opponents that this senior season would be different. Of course she would launch it from 3, but putting the ball on the hardwood and exploiting the mid-range, she was 54% from the field. Talk about a clutch shooter. Haley is one of the most accountable and coachable players on the floor. Add her athleticism and determination to the fold, she is one tough kid to handle.
Blair Baugus Blair Baugus 6'0" | PF Wayne Co. | 2025 State TN (6’0/Jr./F/ Wayne Co.)– OMG. A beast. She has been doing this for years. She won the award last year and guess what? She’s back again. Complacency doesn’t live in her neck of the woods. This year, she averaged 17.1ppg, 7.7 rpg, 1.5 apg, 2.3 spg, and 1.2 bpg. Talk about nasty. She was even 57% from the field and 83% from the foul line. I’ll take those numbers any day. The kid is a fierce competitor and gets better every time she steps on the floor. She has been dominating the competition for awhile and still continues to want more. Blessed with size and athleticism, she still finds ways to add moves to her arsenal. Right now she has a bunch of mid-major offers, but you better believe some power 5 schools will be coming in the near future. This kid’s trajectory arrow is definitely pointing up. A stellar kid who just competes her tail off from tip to the final horn.
Savannah Davis Savannah Davis 5'9" | SG McKenzie | 2024 State TN (5’9/Sr./G/ McKenzie)– A swiss army type of player, she too is a former winner of this prestigious award (2022 winner). She is a MTSU commit who is such a baller. The Lady Raiders got a steal in this kid. This year she set the TSSAA 3 point record, draining 17 threes from beyond the arc. Check her stat line out: 25.6ppg, 7.4rpg, 3.2 apg, 2.3spg, and 1.0 bpg. Lawd, talk about an active kid who makes an impact for her ball club. Savannah has a motor and can play off the bounce. However, give her any space and a window and it lights out, she is clutch with the ball in her hands, hitting the bottom of the net. She has had an amazing senior season thus far. However, even though this is a prestigious award, she still wants to add this year’s gold ball to her resume. A great kid who will be a big factor at the next level.
Stay tuned for the 2A Miss Tennessee Basketball finalists.
