Continue ReadingThe weekend of February 23rd & 24th were the final four games of the Girls 2A Championship. The brackets stayed true to form as the top 4 seeds all advanced to the final 4. In the first semifinal it was the Miami Vandals advancing over the Pima Roughriders 56-30. In the second semifinal of the day Phoenix Country Day advanced winning over the San Carlos Braves 63-38. In the championship game it was the Phoenix Country Day Eagles winning in convincing fashion over Miami 60-30. This was the second consecutive title for Coach Newland and PCDS.
Here I take a look at some of the top performers from the weekend.

Owens was the most outstanding player of the weekend. She scored at will in a variety of ways including deep 3s. She was able to slice through the defense effortlessly and create for both herself and her teammates.

Aila was the engine of the PCDS offense, and she ran it effectively. She constantly put pressure on the defense with her penetration ability which also created constant open looks for her teammates. She put up monster numbers including a near triple double in the championship game.

Even though she didn’t shoot particularly well, Tamia still left her imprint on both games. The freshman displayed good court vision and handles. Her slick ball handling ability allowed her to get pretty much any shot that she wanted. She surprisingly rebounded very well from her position which allowed her team to get into the offense quicker.

Dosela is a nice combo forward that showed solid post moves and the ability to step out and shoot perimeter jump shots. Her excellent footwork allowed her to step out and guard players on the perimeter.

Cutter is a versatile wing that plays multiple positions. She has the ability to get the rebound and push the ball up court. Her shooting range extended out to the three-point line.

Kylee is a face up 5 that has very good work that enabled her to operate from different spots on the court. She knows how to use her body to keep the defender off balance. She’s also a very good passer from the high post.

Pima
Hoopes is a forward who is very light on her feet, and this allowed her to put the ball on the floor and go by defenders. She’s a hard worker in the post that caused the defense to double team her at times.
