As we move towards the postseason, I wanted to highlight some players who are X factors for teams with aspirations of winning their regions and advancing to Rupp Arena next month.
Calloway County and McCracken County seem poised to meet at some point in March and the winner will be the heavy favorite to get to Rupp. Both teams have star power ( Claire Johnson Claire Johnson 5’10” | CG McCracken County | 2024 State KY and Mikee Buchanan at McCracken and Sayler Lowe Sayler Lowe 6’0″ | SG Calloway County | 2026 State KY and Jaidan Koch Jaidan Koch 5’7″ | SG Calloway County | 2026 State KY at Calloway) and those games often come down to the role players. Crouch is the best role player on the two rosters, averaging 8 points per game. Don’t underestimate the importance of players like Crouch to step up and make big plays on both ends of the court in the postseason.
Henderson is loaded and young. They don’t have a single Senior on their roster and could be in a position to challenge Sacred Heart for a title in the short term. Green is a balanced scorer who does a little bit of everything for the Lady Colonels. While there are two other ladies on the squad who average more points than Atylia, I think she has the potential to explode for 20+ in any game and that can make a huge difference next month. Especially if Henderson advances to Rupp Arena.
Highlights
The 3rd region revolves around the 9th district this season. Three of the top 4 teams in the region are in Owensboro. Owensboro Catholic is the top seed in the 9th so Owensboro and Daviess County will duel for the right to play the Aces in the district title game. Carter-Swanagan was the second leading scorer for the Red Devils in both of their games against DC this season. If she plays at a high level, they can get into the regional tournament and be a real threat to upset Owensboro Catholic.
Highlights
Heading into March, Franklin-Simpson is having a monster season and no one is talking about them as a threat to win it all. A lot of the Wildcats success is thanks to the presence of Brown. One of the most efficient scorers in Kentucky, Lyniah is shooting nearly 60% for the season while maximizing her touches as a third offensive option. If they get to Rupp, keep an eye on Brown to be a difference maker in a potential push towards a championship for Franklin-Simpson.
