Each team was complete with great coaching and promising young talent that will undoubtedly have successful high school careers. Here is a short list of some of the top 7th/8th grade wing players I watched that should become immediate impact players to their schools program beginning in August. The Class of 2028 could be very, very special. (www.hooperson1y.com)
Sophia Moreira – AZ Gremlins
Sophia is a very strong and physical player capable of playing multiple positions. Sophia displayed very good court vision and good decision making from the middle of the court. Offensively Sophia showed the ability to use convincing head-and-shoulder fakes and hesitation moves to get herself to the paint when being pressured. Sophia is also more than comfortable shooting from well beyond the three point line off skip or swing passes. Sophia was one of the more physically gifted players I evaluated on the day and a player that should be ready to contribute to her school varsity team beginning Day 1.
Anna Manning Anna Manning 5'9" | CG Campo Verde | 2028 AZ (Wing) – AZ Gremlins
Anna has opposing coaches and parents always reminding defenders where she is on the court. She is a shooter first and foremost, however Anna also plays with an aggressive dribble drive to the basket where she has the ability to finish with a polished float game or where she can kick (often one handed off the dribble) to open teammates who may have had their defender commit to help. Anna puts pressure on defenders whenever she has the ball in her hands and excels with the ball in transition pushing the ball forcibly at unorganized transition defenders. Anna should be another Day 1 contributor to her school varsity team next season.
Hala Aoufe (Wing) – Strive
Watching Hala play today was just a microcosm of what her high school career will probably look like. Hala is a position-less player capable of stretching the defense with her long range shooting, ability to break down defenders down off the dribble, and still be a very physical and dominating presence down low. Hala puts the most pressure on opponents with her ability to rebound-and-run on her own creating instant pressure on transition defenses. Hala was one of the most polished and talented players I was able to evaluate the entire day. Very promising high school career ready to unfold.
Kenzie Fields – Strive
Kenzie Fields is a true wing player who brings good size and a willingness to rebound especially on the offensive end. Offensively Kenzie plays with continual motion; anticipating openings to slide in to within the offense along the three point arc. Defenders really can’t afford to forget, lose track of, or help off Kenzie too far as she only needs a small opening to get her shot off. Kenzie was one of the top three point threats I evaluated on the day and will be welcomed at the high school level for her shooting and offensive game.
Lizzy Guincho – Strive
Lizzy is an all-around wing player who may not have one specialty to her game yet, but is incredibly well-rounded and does a number of things really well already. Everything Lizzy does is with a high motor beginning with her ability to physically defend and willingness to hit the boards. Offensively Lizzy displayed great skill pushing the ball in transition and getting the ball into the paint off the dribble. Lizzy displayed long range scoring, inside the paint scoring, and finishing in transition. Lizzy is going to be a terrific addition to her high school program and will bring a great deal of versatility to it.
Ayesha Phillips – AZ Fire
Ayesha is not fun to play against especially if you drew the defensive assignment of guarding her. She plays strong, aggressive, and is seeking to draw contact against you. Ayesha lives around the basket where opponents simply can’t much up with her strength and the free throw line. As Ayesha continues to develop and becomes more polished with gaining low post position and given one or two post moves, she will definitely be a prospect worth keeping an eye on.
