Q&A with Coach Barry Jacobsen
PHD: Can you tell me a little about your coaching/basketball background?
“I have coached at the HS level for 15 years. Starting on the boy’s side for 8 years and now on the girl’s side for the past 7 years.”
PHD: Why are you excited to coach this group?
“First of all, this group just has fun. Both on and off the court. They are fiercely competitive and get along really well. Second, we bring back a core of the team that had a lot of success last summer. We have added talent to that core that I think can take us to another level.”
PHD: What will be the strengths of your team?
“Our continuity with each other and overall basketball IQ will be our strengths.”
PHD: What style of basketball will you play?
“We’ll play with pace and in space. Really want to give each girl an opportunity to showcase their abilities on both ends.”
PHD: What will your team “hang your hat on”?
“Our ability to share the ball and play together on both ends consistently.”
PHD: Who do you predict will be your top defender?
“At the guard position, I’m not sure there is a better perimeter defender in Midwest than Addison Neuendorf Addison Neuendorf 5'4" | PG Hamlin | 2026 State SD . She’s tough, quick, and has an extremely high IQ. At the wing position, Sadie Mehrman Sadie Mehrman 5'9" | CG Harrisburg | 2026 State SD consistently guarded the best wing from the other team. She’s uber-competitive and is fundamentally sound. And, in the middle of it all, is Ashlyn Koupal Ashlyn Koupal 6'3" | SG Wagner | 2026 State SD . Asked to guard the other teams big all while protecting the paint. Very few girls her age can match her size and athleticism.”
What event/tournament are you looking forward to the most?
“I always look forward to Summer Jam in June. But, since we joined the Power 24 circuit, going to Texas, Kentucky, and Ohio to face a lot of new teams will be fun.”
Do you see your team play man, zone, or a mix of both?
“We will be primarily man, but definitely will use some zone when needed.”
Will your team get together and practice, if so how often?
“We’ve had 10 practices so far, and will get together for another 10+ over the course of the spring/summer. With the makeup of our team, that really speaks to the dedication of these girls and families.”
What are your goals for this AAU/grassroots season?
“I just want these girls to have fun and showcase their talents and skills all the while hopefully learning and improving their games.”
Who are some of the top shooters?
“Hard for me to pick just one or two off this team. Each of them have the green light to shoot and have proven they can make multiple 3’s a game at a high percentage.”
