June Look At HS Hoops: Putnam Science Academy's Newest Members

The Putnam Science Academy Mustangs are on recruiting storm right now. Last year they had a bunch of upperclassmen and are looking to fill in the roster to make a run this year in the NEPSAC race. Coach Greg Canzater's recruitment strategy takes a unique, yet potent style. The Mustangs have been in good hands since hiring Coach Canzater and his newest bunch of girls are an early demonstration of this. They add a bunch of value to a team that was already competitive. These are a quick look at 5 of the latest recruits Coach Canzater has coming in to the squad.    Vega Larru (2027) | 5'3 PG | Spain   A young shifty and elusive guard with a quick change of speed. Larru is a true point for her club team that gets others involved easily because of her attacking nature. Vega stars in a bunch of roles that require her to have the ball in her hand and she will definitely get a shot running the show for the Mustangs. Larru can serve as an excellent relief in the backcourt. Having a player like her off the bench can serve a team well in a bunch of challenging scenarios. Vega seems to think the game well and has a natural flow that provide her a certain edge over her competitors. Mixing the intangibles with playmaking as well as a bit of scoring and the Mustangs have an ideal architype pg with a budding future.     Isil Koksal (2025) | 5'3 PG | Turkey   Isil Koksal is a tenacious driver and a great defender for an undersized guard. Koksal plays way bigger than her size would show. Koksal works well in the pick & roll situations. She is a straight-line driver that gets to her spot by any means. She carves out nice driving lanes for herself and she is an avid defender that is a pest in the backcourt. Expect Koksal to add a nice change of pace to the craftier and more slippery guards on the team. She can have a real impact and her play will assist in the winning columns. Koksal will be a perfect addition to the Mustang squad this upcoming year.     Varvara Utina is a sturdy wing prospect that is an excellent driver. She shows the ability to take the ball and go coast-to-coast in transition. Without the ball in her hand Varvara is a good cutter and finds open spots behind the defense. Utina doesn't shy away from contact despite her thinner frame. She has the ability to finish with both hands, while soaking up contact on the way to the rim. Varvara loves knifing through the defense and taking it into the heart of the defense without hesitation. Watching some film of her playing with her club in Russia, it was clear that Utina can influence positive play from her relentless attitude. With a ton a shooting on the roster, it's refreshing to see such an enthusiastic driver of the basketball added to the bunch.     [player_tooltip player_id='1116002' first='Tacko' last='Sy'] (2025) | 6'3 PF | Senegal   Sy is an extremely raw wing prospect with a ton of potential. She has some upside as a point forward like player and can dribble the ball pretty well for her size. Tacko is an agile and long player that has great size. Sy's size combined her athleticism allow her to get to the rim easily. Her length alone makes her a tough cover. Sy can shoot the ball when open from the high post and short comer areas of the floor. Sy will bring an interesting look to the Mustangs this year and she will be able to craft her skills nicely at PSA. Coach Canzater has a true x-factor on the squad and used correctly she can offer an abundance of help in various spots on the floor this year.     Janaya Prince (2025) | 5'1 PG | Putnam Science Academy   A great point guard that has proven success in her high school career already. One of the better point guards from Rhode Island and she has one of the best arsenals of moves from someone at her position. Prince is a fast guard that is an offense initiator. She plays with enough poise to efficiently run an offense but has the offensive potency to keep her a threat at all times. Despite her size, she gets to the rim with ease in any offensive set. A good shooter with seamless mechanics. Janaya has a great motor, that makes up for her lack of height and an unshakable competitiveness that allow to raise her level of play. Prince is a great defender that gets underneath ballhandlers with her quick hands. Prince's fiery edge make her a tireless defender and a real pest for her opponents. Prince brings a certain swagger to her game and her infectious energy will almost uncertainly become a positive influence on the Mustangs.
