Having coached at both big schools and small schools I can say with confidence that size is the biggest difference in levels. In 5A/6A there is generally a lot more height & length and this year is no different. Below I have outlined a few of the power forwards and centers that caught my eye on night one of the Grandview/Arapahoe fall league.

Elly was really impressive offensively playing on the block against D'Evelyn. Her ability to "do her work early" and seal defenders deep in the paint allowed for a bunch of easy buckets. Daniels was also really active on the offensive glass all night long. She finished with 16 points and a flurry of rebounds. Keep an eye on this talented 2026 prospect.

Aaliyah had a very good first night of summer league, showing a little bit of everything in her basketball arsenal. Her size, athleticism, rebounding, and ability to stretch the floor was impressive. At one moment in the second half Broadus was blocking a shot and the very next next possession she hit a deep 3 from the top of the key. Cherokee Trail is loaded with talented guards, but toughness inside could be the key to another state championship run.

Hannah is one of the very few traditional Centers in 6A and that makes her a valuable asset on this Cherokee Trail Squad. We've all heard the term "defense wins championships" - Well, a big part of that includes protecting the basket. Hannah is a strong rim protector that can block or alter shots at a high clip. Combine that with her rebounding prowess and you have an impactful player that can help the Cougars play against the tough Centennial League centers they will face.

[player_tooltip player_id='329364' first='Aaliyah' last='Maze'] showed a very versatile skill set for Rock Canyon on Monday night. In game one vs Cherokee Trail she showed her perimeter ability by passing, cutting and moving well. Aaliyah had some nice drives and even knocked down a big 3. However, in game number 2 against Arapahoe she went down and got busy in the paint. She was physical and competed hard on the offensive glass. Keep an eye on this impact transfer.

Izzy is a 2 year varsity player for Arapahoe that is definitely on the verge of a big season. She is extraordinarily long, runs well, rebounds with tenacity and showed the ability to guard multiple positions. Her ability to play virtually anywhere on the floor presents as a matchup nightmare for opponents. There's a saying "you are what you can guard" and Johnston stands to earn a big role this year because she has it in her to lock opponents down as well as contribute offensively.
