What's that they say about saving the best for last? If you like a little drama with your basketball, if a dose of controversy is on your bucket list, if you're up for a roller coaster ride of adventure from start to finish, then the last game of the day at the Kasson-Mantorville Showcase on Saturday was definitely the game for you. This annual event always seems to deliver, and this year's edition was no different. I'm not sure we've seen a more bizarre game this season than the one the host Komets captured in overtime against St. Paul Como Park. We've got the details and the best of the rest at the KM Showcase.

GAME OF THE DAY

We don't normally bring you blow-by-blow coverage of any single game on any given day, but there are exceptions. Sparked by some electric play by point guard [player_tooltip player_id='923678' first='Ahmani' last='Crump'], Como Park jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead. The diminutive top 100 sophomore – sister of University of Wisconsin point guard Ronnie Porter – was too quick and too aggressive for the Komets defenders as she left them flat-footed in the early going. In fact, the home team was held scoreless for the first 6 minutes.

Then came the fouls against the Cougars. One after another after another, nearly all whistled by a single official. Yes, Como plays aggressive defense. Yes, they were getting after it in a big way. No, there should not have been a foul differential of +10 before the period was halfway done. As a result, Como had three starters with three fouls each by the midway point of the period. Not surprisingly, Kasson-Mantorville came back. By the time KM senior [player_tooltip player_id='595574' first='Keigan' last='Cummings'] buried a three-point shot and then made a free throw for her 1,000th career point, the contest was tied at 20-20. By half time, the Komets had assembled a big run and were ahead 32-25.

In the second half it looked like the Komets were going to run away and hide as they stretched the margin to 12, but the Cougars simply would not go away. With half the roster just a mistake or two from fouling out, Como willed their way back into the game led by senior [player_tooltip player_id='531697' first='Cecelia' last='Davis'], who is forging an admirable comeback from a torn ACL. Cece was nothing short of stellar. She went 6-for-9 on the night from beyond the arc and 8-for-9 from the free throw line with the game hanging in the balance. As a result, Como more than made up the deficit and with one minute remaining in regulation play the Cougars were ahead by 7.

Then it was the Komets turn for the dramatic as senior [player_tooltip player_id='595553' first='Makenzie' last='Carrier'] nailed a three with 52 seconds remaining. It was back and forth after that with KM playing the foul game. Then, with just 7.3 seconds on the clock, Como made a pair of free throws to stretch the margin to three. Kasson-Mantorville sprinted up the floor and Carrier launched a desperation heave as the buzzer sounded. It went in, and the game moved on to overtime.

Como Park forged ahead in the extra period as Davis' long bomb gave them another 7-point lead. Surely that would be enough of a margin this time around, would it not? Nope it was not as KM went 9-for-10 from the free throw line to pull off a remarkable 81-78 victory.

Averaging over 18 points per game, Davis finished with 32 for Como Park while Crump had 15. KM senior post [player_tooltip player_id='854902' first='Ella' last='Stoskopf'] went 14-for-19 from the free throw line for 21 points with 17 rebounds. Carrier was 29 and 10, Cummings went 19 and 5, and the two of them, along with Delaney Awe, were a combined 17-for-17 at the line. The Komets paid a price for their victory, however, as Cummings went down with a painful ankle injury that kept her off the floor for the entire OT. Also lost was junior post Ellen Maki-Hakola, who broke her nose. Meanwhile, 6th player Schuyler Sullivan was out with a knee injury suffered in the JV game. All in all it was a night everyone in attendance will not soon forget.

TOP TWOSOME

[player_tooltip player_id='252380' first='Kendra' last='Harvey'] & [player_tooltip player_id='498663' first='Madison' last='Ohm'] – Byron
This twosome is no stranger to the limelight. Harvey is a top 25 prospect in the Class of 2025 and has secured a scholarship to the University of North Dakota. Ohm is a top 20 prospect in the Class of 2026, who will attempt to bolster her credentials this summer on the EYBL circuit with [program_tooltip program_id='712722' first='North' last='Tartan']. On Saturday the pair was on fire. Ohm nailed four triples and scored 28 points. Harvey also made 4 threes, went 10-for-11 at the free throw line, and totaled 38 points on the day. Kendra also celebrated her 2,000th career point as Byron defeated New Ulm 92-80.

THE DAILY BEAST

[player_tooltip player_id='550025' first='Kendyl' last='Lodermeier'] – 2025 forward, Goodhue
If you watched Goodhue win the Class A state championship last spring, then you know just how much of a beast Lodermeier can be down low. The big power forward demonstrated that once again on Saturday as she dominated Winona Cotter in the paint in a 67-41 victory. Knocking on the door of a top 50 ranking in the class of 2025, Kendyl is a relentless rebounder and fierce competitor. She scored 27 points on the day. We lost count of the number of boards. Lodermeier has committed to D2 Upper Iowa University.

DEFENDER OF THE DAY

[player_tooltip player_id='862790' first='Natalie' last='Thomforde'] – 2026 guard, Goodhue

While Lodermeier was dominating the Ramblers down low, Thomforde was tying up Cotter standout [player_tooltip player_id='778750' first='Clarissa' last='Sauer'] everywhere else. Sauer, who has committed to D2 Augustana, is big and strong and is one of the most athletic small-school players in the state. At 5'11 with a wingspan that looks even longer, Natalie has parlayed her natural assets into a defensive weapon for the Wildcats. Her lateral movement, superior instincts, and dogged tenacity are a potent package, and on this occasion the result was impressive. The only time Sauer really got free was in the few minutes when Natalie was catching her breath on the bench. Thomforde punctuated her defensive performance with a splash of offense, nailing a three-pointer as the halftime buzzer sounded to give Goodhue a commanding 33-15 lead. She finished with 11 points. There were plenty of standout performers for the Wildcats – [player_tooltip player_id='866106' first='Lola' last='Christianson'], [player_tooltip player_id='1078537' first='Aubrey' last='Christianson'] and [player_tooltip player_id='589279' first='Ava' last='Wallaker'] among them – but Thomforde's shutdown job was exceptional.

UNSIGNED SENIOR OF THE DAY

[player_tooltip player_id='453728' first='Ajiem' last='Agwa'] – 2025 guard, Austin

Averaging north of 20 points per game and delivering consistent excellence on a nightly basis, Ajiem has more than earned her #49 ranking in the Class of 2025. Given that, her excellence in the classroom and obvious leadership ability, it's baffling to us why Agwa isn't getting more next-level opportunities. We believe she is a D2-level talent who will excel in college. Agwa certainly looked the part on Saturday as she opened the game against Fridley with four straight triples. She scored 31 points to lead the Packers to a 76-62 win. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='595577' first='Marissa' last='Shute'] turned in another strong performance as did sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='947972' first='Quinn' last='Osgood'], who was hot early. Both totaled 14 points as Austin extended its record to 12-3. Hopefully some college coaches were watching.

DESTINED FOR DIVISION 1

[player_tooltip player_id='208184' first='Zahara' last='Bishop'] – 2025 guard, Benilde-St. Margaret's

Zahara tends to run a little hot and cold, but when she's "on" there are few better than the top 20 senior from Benilde-St. Margaret's. The first-half show she put on against Stewartville on Saturday was one to remember as Bishop was in attack mode from the opening tip. The Seton Hall commit made a beeline for the basket constantly, scoring six field goals every which way you can. A dramatic spin move and finish through the lane in traffic was particularly impressive. She also got to the free throw line, going 7-for-8 in the process. Everyone was firing on all cylinders for BSM in the half as the Red Knights put up 62 for a 34-point lead against Stewartville. Bishop, who averages about 20 ppg, finished with 23. Sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id='567389' first='Sydney' last='Friedly'] made 5 threes in the first half and had 19. Creighton signee [player_tooltip player_id='296523' first='Kendall' last='McGee'] scored 21.
