We're in the final month of the high school basketball regular season, which has flown by. I've got 72 games under me from Bay Port to Cuba City, Beloit, and Rice Lake. There are plenty of kids I've seen and highlighted throughout the season, but there are a few kids I'd like to highlight in my first few articles of the month.

I hadn't seen the DeForest product in over a year before the Badger Challenge and was impressed by what she did. I thought she did well at earning prime real estate under the basket and showed good hands by catching the ball in traffic multiple times. Depending on the situation, she also showed she would pass out of the post, which led to open perimeter looks. She has tools to build on.

You can't teach effort. The way Koch plays should be endearing to anyone who watches her. Whatever she has in the tank, she'll make sure she finishes the game on empty. How Koch attacks the glass, defends, and launches herself after loose balls makes it hard to dislike her game. She can get a little out of control, but every coach would prefer to reign a kid in than have to rev them up. There is development she can continue to do with her finishing and her perimeter game, but she has a passion that coaches would adore.

The Grafton guard has been among the focal points for the Black Hawks this season and can be a game-changer on any night. She's possibly the most athletic kid on Grafton's roster and knows how to use it. Her length and burst allow her to jump passing lanes and break for easy looks at the rim in transition. She's shooting the ball from the perimeter well this season and has helped make the Black Hawks a frustrating team to play against.

Some kids aren't dealt the best cards but still make the most of what they have, and Justmann is one of those kids. The Marshall native has classmates who have been solid players in the past, passed on basketball this season in favor of club volleyball, and Justmann has played hard every second she's been on the floor and holds herself to a high standard. Kids like that tend to pan out. A small-town kid without a high reputation program makes her fall back into the shadows, but I loved what I saw from her.
