Mid-Season Report: Growth And Maturation

There has been some phenomenal basketball played thus far. One word that keeps coming to mind in covering the sport is “growth.” You are starting to see the maturation process from both individual players and teams as we move closer to tournament play.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Everyone should be well into district play or ramping up. Those early-season matchups were there to sharpen teams for what is about to come. From early-season matchups to holiday tournaments, all were done to get teams ready to make this final stretch. Some clubs are just getting started in district play, while others are about to catch the second half of the district. The one thing you have to consider is that every game, no matter the opponent, means something during this time. To obtain a win over an opponent and place yourself high up in your prospective district gives you an advantage in numerous ways, especially when it comes to tournament play.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>As I mentioned earlier, “growth” has occurred around the state. In the mid-state, you are starting to see it even more. This solid floor general isn't just dropping dimes, but hunting great shots within the offense. Using her quick first step and tight handles, she is able to get downhill to favorable spots and stop on a dime as she raises into a shot attempt. Her defense has improved as she is getting more steals and deflections, leading to transition breaks heading the other way. Her presence on the floor is important as she opens up so much for others on her team. Plays with a ton of energy, she does all the little things that help propel her ballclub. Scoring in the paint, rebounding, using her court vision to hit open teammates, she plays with poise, doesn't get rattled, and executes. In a tough district, teams tend to downplay her contributions. Don't underestimate her, as she provides the fuel the Lady Bears run on. She keeps possessions alive, getting O-boards and putting them back up. Defensively, she's aggressive, neutralizing her opponent and contributing by creating turnovers and securing rebounds. Her presence on the floor deters opponents from attacking her area. She loves the competition and steps up not only against opponents but also in big-time moments. With a nice release on her shot and the will to want to excel at this game, this young lady is going to be a problem for many years to come.
