While many teams are in the thick of region play, Wasatch and Bingham both used their bye weeks to stage a compelling 5A vs. 6A matchup. Entering the game, Wasatch, ranked #6 in the state, faced off against Bingham, the #14 team. Though both teams presented a strong challenge, Wasatch demonstrated a significant height advantage throughout the contest.

Who Stood Out

Mahala Speredon, Wasatch

Mahala Speardon of Wasatch ignited the game from the outset, scoring the first six points and forcing a quick Bingham timeout. The performance solidified her status as a top Division 1 prospect, as she finished with 19 points, all coming inside. Speardon's touch with her left hand has shown significant improvement. Defensively, she's a force, moving fluidly on the perimeter to guard opposing guards as zones shift. Her impressive mobility up and down the court, consistently performing well from rim to rim, cements her as an outstanding MM/LM Division 1 prospect.

[player_tooltip player_id='796474' first='Evalyn' last='Roberts'], Bingham

Bingham found success against the zone by utilizing one of their top shooters in the high post. [player_tooltip player_id='796474' first='Evalyn' last='Roberts'] made excellent decisions and contributed significantly with both points and assists in that position. Defensively, she faced the challenge of guarding a larger player but performed admirably when it mattered most. Roberts' shooting ability allowed her to space the floor, even drawing the attention of defenders who guarded her closely at times. With her potential, Roberts could develop into an LM Division prospect.

Clutch Players

[player_tooltip player_id='789054' first='Danielle' last='Garner'], Wasatch

Garner is a rebounding machine. The way she attacks the glass, as if her life depends on it is what next-level schools look for and can't wait to harness that energy. She is a player who moves like crazy, which helps her score inside. Garner also has a solid mid-range jumper that she can turn to when defenders sag off of her.

[player_tooltip player_id='875180' first='Lanie' last='Smith'], Bingham

Smith is a player who comes off the bench and transforms into a valuable sixth man, as evidenced by her performance last night. She proved clutch from beyond the arc, hitting four three-pointers and finishing with 14 points. Her shooting ability, particularly late in the game, allowed her to draw her defender, which in turn opened up opportunities for her teammates on the court.

Players on the Rise

[player_tooltip player_id='875185' first='Avery' last='Aiono'], Bingham

Aiono is starting to mature on the floor, as she has been making some good defensive reads, and her activity rebounding as a guard has been impressive.

[player_tooltip player_id='1357903' first='Kate' last='Miller'], Wasatch

Miller is quick off the dribble and can get in the lane and create. Defensively, she is a tough player to shake.

Game Trends

Early in the game, Wasatch took an early 6-0 lead, largely due to Mahala Speardon's strong performance. Wasatch also received solid contributions from [player_tooltip player_id='789068' first='Fili' last='Liava'a'], who effectively controlled the game's tempo, working in Wasatch's favor. However, Bingham gradually improved their play as [player_tooltip player_id='796474' first='Evalyn' last='Roberts'] and Veana Pau'u became more comfortable and effective.

In the second quarter, Bingham received a significant boost from [player_tooltip player_id='875180' first='Lanie' last='Smith'] and [player_tooltip player_id='875185' first='Avery' last='Aiono'], who, despite not scoring, were instrumental in creating opportunities and finding open spaces within the zone. However, Wasatch capitalized on Bingham's defensive lapses, with Anna Greenhall hitting a crucial corner three-pointer.

Fast forward to the 4th quarter, Bingham executed crucial defensive stops, spearheaded by [player_tooltip player_id='796801' first='Hannah' last='Harmon']. The team also benefited from clutch baskets by Brizban Cottle, [player_tooltip player_id='875185' first='Avery' last='Aiono'], and [player_tooltip player_id='789053' first='Stacia' last='Peoples']. While Wasatch consistently sought opportunities for Mahala Speardon, Bingham's resilient defensive efforts ultimately proved decisive in this intense 5A/6A matchup.

Bingham 51-49 Wasatch

While many teams are in the thick of region play, Wasatch and Bingham both used their bye weeks to stage a compelling 5A vs. 6A matchup. Entering the game, Wasatch, ranked #6 in the state, faced off against Bingham, the #14 team. Though both teams presented a strong challenge, Wasatch demonstrated a significant height advantage throughout the contest.
