This might have been an unlikely matchup between two teams that had their fair share of ups and downs throughout the season. The defending State Champions and winners of 4 Titles in a row entered the game 16-10, and Region 3 Champions. While the Bingham Miners entered the game 18-8 and finished 4th in Region 2.

The Dark Horse

The Bingham Miners entered the tournament as a "Dark Horse." The #6 Seed found itself with a bracket that featured all familiar foes. With a nail-biting win against Skyridge, where they had to contain one of the best young scorers in the state, [player_tooltip player_id='875188' first='Elena' last='Chiara']. Their next round opponent was the Region 2 foe and Region 2 Champion, Cedar Valley. The Miners had fallen to this team twice this season, and it looked like they might fall again, but they were able to pull out an improbable come-from-behind win, sparked by sharp-shooter [player_tooltip player_id='796474' first='Evalyn' last='Roberts'].

While riding high, Bingham defeated their preseason opponent, Syracuse, with contributions from sixth-man [player_tooltip player_id='875180' first='Lanie' last='Smith']. Emerging from the lower bracket, they embraced the "Dark Horse" mentality, wearing their black uniforms throughout the tournament. As underdogs, they faced the #5 seed, Lone Peak, in the Championship game. Senior captain [player_tooltip player_id='789053' first='Stacia' last='Peoples'] and [player_tooltip player_id='796469' first='Veanna' last='Pau'u'] delivered key performances as the Dark Horse upset Lone Peak, which was aiming for a five-peat.

5-Peat Loading...

While many thought the Knights were down and out due to their tough schedule and the loss of a few key players this season, Lone Peak found a way. Although they were without [player_tooltip player_id='873278' first='Jordan' last='Moeaki'] and [player_tooltip player_id='796745' first='Kennedy' last='Woolston'], [player_tooltip player_id='849040' first='Lave' last='Holdcraft'] and [player_tooltip player_id='952625' first='Peyton' last='Warner'] stepped up in a big way. The two had been on a tear and were the main reason for their run. They entered the Championship Game on a 6-game winning streak, with big wins over Lehi, Mountain Ridge, and Westlake. The Westlake vs. Lone Peak game was a rematch, but Lone Peak rode a huge game from [player_tooltip player_id='873282' first='Charli' last='Warner'] and [player_tooltip player_id='804252' first='Madeline' last='Pope'] to hold off a Westlake comeback. Lone Peak against Bingham seemed to be a game Lone Peak could dictate, and they got out to an early lead, but Bingham settled in, and the Knights could not keep pace. [player_tooltip player_id='952625' first='Peyton' last='Warner'] had an outstanding game.

Unsung Performers

[player_tooltip player_id='805797' first='Quinn' last='Porter'], Bingham

[player_tooltip player_id='805797' first='Quinn' last='Porter'] of Bingham showcased her potential throughout the tournament, proving herself as a versatile player capable of making crucial contributions in any situation. Her performance in the Championship game was particularly noteworthy. Porter excelled in rebounding, defense, and shot-blocking, solidifying her role as a key player and elevating Bingham's overall performance to a higher level.

Madaline Pope, Lone Peak

[player_tooltip player_id='804252' first='Madeline' last='Pope'] of Lone Peak was a vital part of her team's performance. She consistently hustled up and down the court, often switching defensive assignments across all five positions. Her rebounding efforts were particularly noteworthy, as she consistently grabbed crucial possessions. While her stat line might only show 6 points, Pope's contributions extended far beyond the scoring column, encompassing impactful defensive plays and tireless effort that often go unnoticed, solidifying her status as an unsung performer.

Who Stepped Up

[player_tooltip player_id='796469' first='Veanna' last='Pau'u'], Bingham

[player_tooltip player_id='796469' first='Veanna' last='Pau'u'] proved to be an interior force for Bingham. Even when not consistently receiving the ball, she skillfully exploited defensive weaknesses, particularly during set plays and in the motion offense, creating excellent scoring opportunities. Against zone defenses, she emerged as a potent offensive threat, effectively rebounding and maintaining her presence despite physical contact.

[player_tooltip player_id='952625' first='Peyton' last='Warner'], Lone Peak

Warner is a physical guard who excels at both shooting and driving to the basket. Her determination is evident when she attacks downhill, showcasing her ability to finish around the rim and draw fouls effectively. Despite being a freshman, Warner's potential and promising development make her a player to watch and follow as she continues to grow and improve.

[player_tooltip player_id='789053' first='Stacia' last='Peoples'], Bingha

[player_tooltip player_id='789053' first='Stacia' last='Peoples'] showcased a remarkable performance, elevating her game significantly. Entering the match with an average of around 4 points per game (PPG), her 14-point output was a clear indication of her enhanced contribution. Peoples effectively dictated the game's pace and demonstrated resourcefulness in finding scoring opportunities. Her tenacious nature as a point guard (PG) has been a crucial asset throughout the playoffs.

Impact Players

[player_tooltip player_id='875185' first='Avery' last='Aiono'], Bingham

[player_tooltip player_id='875185' first='Avery' last='Aiono'] made an immediate impact every time she stepped onto the court, proving to be a true game-changer. Her defensive prowess and exceptional athleticism were on full display throughout the game. Aiono's constant activity and disruptive nature made her a force to be reckoned with.

[player_tooltip player_id='796474' first='Evalyn' last='Roberts'], Bingham

Evy was tough; she was out there rebounding and also connected on two big three-pointers in this game. She did what she had to do to help her team win.
