2027 Sectional Preview: McCutcheon Looks Like the Team to Beat

Heading into the 2026 girls basketball sectional, there is no shortage of intriguing storylines among McCutcheon, Lafayette Jeff, Harrison (West Lafayette), and Kokomo. Each program enters the year with different expectations, but all four have pieces capable of making postseason noise.

While several teams could challenge for a deep run, Kokomo enters the season as the early favorite to win the sectional. Their combination of experience, physicality, and proven production gives them the edge heading into the year. Harrison appears poised to be the biggest challenger, while McCutcheon and Lafayette Jeff both have opportunities to surprise if younger players develop quickly throughout the season.

Kokomo Wildcats

Kokomo enters the season carrying the pressure and expectations of a sectional favorite, and rightfully so. The Wildcats bring back a strong core that understands what it takes to compete in meaningful games late in the season. Their experience alone separates them from much of the field, but it is their balance on both ends of the floor that makes them especially dangerous.

Kokomo's ability to defend in the half court and control tempo should allow them to dictate games against most opponents. Offensively, they have enough scoring versatility to avoid long droughts, and their physical style of play often wears teams down over four quarters. The Wildcats also possess the type of veteran leadership that becomes critical during tournament time.

If Kokomo stays healthy and continues to build chemistry early in the year, they have all the tools necessary to capture another sectional championship and potentially make a deeper postseason run beyond that.

Harrison (West Lafayette) Raiders

Harrison enters the year as a legitimate contender and perhaps the biggest threat to Kokomo's sectional hopes. The Raiders have quietly built a solid foundation with returning contributors who gained valuable experience last season.

What stands out most about Harrison is their overall team play. They may not rely on one individual star every night, but they consistently move the ball well and compete defensively. Their guard play should once again be a strength, especially in pressure situations where decision-making matters most.

If Harrison can improve its consistency offensively and develop another reliable scoring option, the Raiders could absolutely position themselves for a sectional upset. Their toughness and discipline make them a dangerous matchup for anyone in the field.

McCutcheon Mavericks

McCutcheon enters the season with plenty of potential and the opportunity to emerge as one of the more improved teams in the area. The Mavericks will likely rely on younger talent stepping into larger roles, but there is optimism surrounding the direction of the program.

The key for McCutcheon will be offensive consistency. When the Mavericks are able to push tempo and create transition opportunities, they become a much more difficult team to defend. Their energy and effort level should keep them competitive throughout the year.

Defensively, McCutcheon has the chance to become a gritty team that frustrates opponents. If their younger players mature quickly and confidence grows throughout the season, the Mavericks could become a dangerous postseason opponent capable of pulling off an upset.

Lafayette Jeff Bronchos

Lafayette Jeff enters the season looking to take another step forward as a program. The Bronchos have shown flashes of competitiveness and athleticism, and this season could provide opportunities for younger players to gain meaningful experience.

The biggest strength for Lafayette Jeff may be its athletic ability and willingness to compete. The Bronchos have players capable of making plays in the open floor, and if they can establish consistency offensively, they could surprise some teams during the regular season.

One of the biggest areas of growth will be limiting mistakes in key moments. Tournament basketball often comes down to execution late in games, and developing poise under pressure will be important for Lafayette Jeff as the season progresses.

While the Bronchos may enter as underdogs compared to some of the sectional favorites, they have enough athleticism and toughness to make life difficult for higher-seeded teams.

Heading into the 2026 girls basketball sectional, there is no shortage of intriguing storylines among McCutcheon, Lafayette Jeff, Harrison (West Lafayette), and Kokomo. Each program enters the year with different expectations, but all four have pieces capable of making postseason noise.
