Battle In The Sunflower: 13U Impact Players

All over the country, the crop of talent in the 2030-2032 class is being raved about. This year at the Battle in the Sunflower tournament in Andover, KS, this was no different, as there was a unique display of talent all across the Midwest in the 13U bracket that proved that they belonged on everyone's radar. This group of girls showed a tremendous amount of heart, competitiveness, and toughness that is rarely seen this time of year before the fall festivities begin. So many players made an impact over the weekend that there were too many to list, but I was able to break it down to the 8 most notable impact players of this year's Battle in the Sunflower State.    Had the best overall handles at the tournament. She was the most comfortable of everyone, going left with her off-hand and also attacking right. Opponents had to start doubling her on the perimeter to get the ball out of her hands. Otherwise, she would be able to get wherever she wanted on the court. Her ability to dribble also came with a comfortable shooting range at the top of the key, and the ability to set the tempo of a game. Not only is she one of the leading scorers and primary options on offense, but she can also set the table at point. The most impressive part of her game is her toughness. She can get hit in the face, not get a call, and still play through it in attack mode without complaining to anybody about it. Nice Work!!     Very athletic and very versatile utility player who is active everywhere on the floor and has good IQ when it comes to getting rebounds on both ends despite being outsized at times.     Clutch Time Performer Alert!   #4(Tulsa Basketball Academy)Harper came up huge in the final moments of a game against a tough Wichita Phenom squad that had some elite talent on the perimeter. Harper had a rip-through steal on one end while the team was in full-court press mode down 4 with under 30 seconds to go in the game, then turned around & finished with the clutch lay-in to cut it to 2. She and her team were able to get 1 more stop in press mode, and Harper and the Tulsa Basketball Academy 13U girls found themselves with the ball down 2 with under 9 seconds to go. After a timeout and a great play call by the coach, #22 [player_tooltip player_id='1817822' first='Kirbey' last='Leedy'] penetrates quickly from the top of the key around towards the right side baseline and draws 2 defenders; she immediately kicks out to Harper in the corner for a three, and she drains a high-arching buzzer beater over outstretched hands for the game winner to take the victory 30-29 over the favorites in this matchup. This is what basketball is all about!!!     #12 now for (Missouri Phenom Wichita) Brooklynn has improved in leadership on the defensive end over the past year, and she led by example in this tournament by actively being aggressive on defense in all areas of the floor. She continues to be a solid rebounder & is Big on the boards, especially in close games. She also is starting to bring the ball up more, showing some comfortability in her handles. Great Job!!     #4 (Missouri Phenom Wichita) Aaliyah was a sniper from long range in this one with some big-time clutch shots against the Tri State Cyclones. It wasn't the shots, but it was the way she made them. Almost every time she made them, it was in response to a huge surge or a big three from the other squad, and she was always there to reply with big shot after big shot of her own. Her impact was exactly what her team needed!     #24 ( Missouri Phenom Wichita) came up huge in the clutch against an extremely underrated Tri State Cyclones team. She started slow and had a few turnovers, but ended her game strong with huge buckets on the perimeter and especially in that left corner 3ball pocket. She has a bit of a set shot, but it allows her to stay in balance and use her form under control in tight situations. Not to mention, she did a great job of not giving up on a play on the defensive end!     #31 (Missouri Phenom Wichita) 5'8 PG who has the highest upside in this class, who can shoot better than most 17U girls at this event and has the ability already to pull up from three in rhythm in transition. Didn't play much in this tournament, but she made a huge impact in 1 game, hitting multiple threes back to back in limited minutes and making it look too easy while also navigating at the point. Hope to see more of her in the future!
