Prep Girls Hoops Sophomore Showcase: Pure Grit and Determination

Evaluating this group was a clear indication that baseline talent gets you on the floor, but it's the intangibles that matter most to me as an evaluator. I look for talent, obviously, but I want to see what you provide that the next player isn't willing to. These five student-athletes put those intangibles on full display, proving they have exactly what it takes to succeed on the court and, ultimately, in life.   As a final note, this wraps up my coverage of the Freshman and Sophomore Showcase. Because a couple of players registered late, I didn't have names to match every jersey number on my sheet. Notably, I would love to do a write-up on the player who wore #910—she had a really good day on the court and shows tremendous upside. If anyone knows who she is, get in touch so I can give her the credit she earned.    I watched [player_tooltip player_id='1928881' first='Sama' last='Kantar'] in the 3v3 contest, and I was not especially impressed. But once the 5v5 games started, she looked like a completely different player and demonstrated the kind of hooper she really is. When I say she was buzzing around all over the court, she was truly making a difference for her team.   Sama had several great steals that led directly to transition opportunities. On one possession, she stole the ball and took it coast-to-coast herself. She also knocked down multiple 2- and 3-point shots completely within the rhythm of the team's offense.   Besides her scoring, she plays with excellent anticipation, which lets her pick up steals and deliver crisp, timely assists. If she keeps playing with that kind of energy, drive, and passion, she's going to be a problem for opponents moving forward.       [player_tooltip player_id='1674861' first='Tyerra' last='Thomas'] is an absolute competitor with the exact kind of "Dawg mentality" I want in my players. At the end of the day, so much of basketball comes down to who wants it more and which team refuses to be outworked. Talent matters, sure—you need a baseline of skill to step on the floor.   But it's the intangibles that separate the mediocre players from the good ones, and the good ones from the great ones. That "Dawg mentality" is an intangible I think every successful, great player must have. And that is exactly how Tyerra played from the opening tip.   She fought in the paint for position to score, which allowed her to track down and fight for rebounds. Every time I looked up from taking notes, she was diving on the floor for every single 50/50 ball.   Tyerra isn't one-dimensional either; she showed a versatile skill set. She locked up her opponent defensively, drove downhill hard to the rim, kicked the ball out when she needed to, and even stepped out to knock down a three.   In Coach Kara Lawson's words, Tyerra can do hard well. She fought to the bitter end—just a spectacular performance.       [player_tooltip player_id='1922771' first='McKenna' last='Hoellen'] brings a tough, physical presence inside the paint and constantly battles for position under the rim. She is an incredibly smart off-ball player who times her cuts perfectly to create easy looks at the basket. What sets her apart is her high-energy style, which she rounds out with an aggressive defensive mindset while still playing smart on the defensive end.       [player_tooltip player_id='1918801' first='Devan' last='Blueitt'] is incredibly tough and has the skill to convert difficult shots around the basket. She regularly uses her strength to battle through traffic and finish off offensive rebounds. Defensively, she plays smart and completely within herself.       [player_tooltip player_id='1314103' first='Capri' last='Swann'] made her presence felt without dominating the ball. She played with active hands on defense, causing a couple of 50/50 balls. When given space on the perimeter, she consistently knocks down both the midrange and three-point shots.
